The iFrogz EarPollution Plugz

Dear Apple,

The earphones that come with the iPhone and iPod are very uncomfortable, too big, and don’t like to stay in my ears.  Please fix it.

Love,
Nick

P.S.  You would do well to take notes from the iFrogz EarPollution Plugz headset.

Inside the Box

Three sizes of pads guarantee a great fit

Three sizes of pads guarantee a great fit

The box contains the earphones and three pairs of different sized pads.  The medium pads are attached to the earbuds.  The 3.5mm jack is shaped to fit all models of iPhone (even the recessed mess that belongs to the first generation iPhone.)  An inline microphone can be found on the left earbud cord; Apple’s microphone is on the right side cord.

Usage

(All usage scenarios were performed on an iPhone 3GS as a Blackberry was not immediately available.)

These earphones are incredibly comfortable.  They sit very securely in the ear and do not fall out.  Three sizes of pads guarantee a good fit for almost everyone.  While the earphones are marked left/right, they are identical–placing them in the “wrong” ear feels no different that using them as marked.  This comes in handy since the microphone is on the left earbud, and most other headsets place the microphone on the right side.  I have used the earphones extensively at work, and didn’t once need to remove them due to discomfort.  Noise isolation prevents most ambient noise from getting through.   I have been using the iFrogz at work where there is a lot of background noise.  It’s not loud, but it can be very distracting.  Just wearing the earbuds cut the majority of the ambient noise completely.  Only conversations going on very close to my desk were audible.

Audio quality is excellent for both music and movies.  There is a level of clarity in the audio that I wouldn’t expect from such an inexpensive set of earphones.  I found that normally difficult to hear segments of movies were quite audible with the iFrogz headphones.  Quiet dialog in movies become very clear and understandable.  The same holds true for music.  Albums that have subtle audio, such as Dark Side of the Moon are crystal clear.  Throughout the album there are numerous, somewhat quiet conversations or interviews that can be very difficult to hear.  I had no problems hearing these portions while using the iFrogz earbuds.

Call quality using the headset is very good.  Conversations are very clear; they were actually more audible with the iFrogz than using just the iPhone.  If you happen to have an iPhone 3GS, voice commands are very easy to use.  Just click the microphone button and hold it in for a second, and the iPhone voice control function prompts for a command. The only downside here is having to remove one earbud to hear yourself speak normally.  There was a bit of a problem hearing myself speak with both earbuds in, resulting in my speaking much more loudly.

Summary

The comfort and overall quality exceed many headsets that cost far more.  If you are looking to replace your Apple-supplied earbuds, I can happily recommend the iFrogz EarPollution Plugz.

djmeph Compatible with Palm Pre too.

Charshie Good tip and thanks!! As much of an Apple-fangirl as I am, I've held the same gripe against the earphones. Now the rubber strip encircling the ear buds on mine has peeled off, resulting in further discomfort - so I was just starting to look around for a better alternative. Thanks :)

ardichoke What about Android? (specifically the G1) I know a headset is basically a headset, but will it work with one of the stupid adapters that don't have an inline mic already?

Perhaps I misunderstand your question (and please correct me if I'm wrong), but anything that accepts a 3.5mm headphone jack will work with these earphones. The only thing that won't work is the microphone if the device doesn't support it.
  5. ardichoke
ardichoke That's what I'm referring to, I want to know if the mic will work.
  6. mertesn
mertesn If it supports a microphone via the TRRS (Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve) on a 3.5mm plug, then you should have success. After looking at the audio capabilities on the G1's Wikipedia entry, it is not immediately clear whether the adapter supports TRRS or just TRS (headphones only). Your best bet is to ask a G1 owner or a T-Mobile rep.
  7. RyanFodder
RyanFodder Would you recommend these earphones for use with a helmet?

What kind of helmet? If it's something like a bike helmet that doesn't cover your ears, there shouldn't be a problem. No idea otherwise.
  9. RyanFodder
RyanFodder its a full helmet that covers my ears. They would need to not stick out from my earlobes much...
  10. mertesn
mertesn They don't extend past my ears in any direction. You should be in good shape.

ardichoke Must say, I totally regret buying these. None of the 3 sizes of pads will stay in my ears and I have to constantly reposition them if I'm walking/running/moving at all. Never had this problem with a pair of earbuds before (and I've had dozens)

I have the exact opposite experience, Ardi. These are the most comfortable earbuds I've ever owned and they stay in perfectly no matter what I'm doing.

Guess you've just got exceptional ears ;). My wife has the same problem though. She can't get _any_ earbuds to fit comfortably.
  13. ardichoke
ardichoke Yeah... I don't get it. I haven't had problems with other earbuds. I have a pair of VModas that fit me wonderfully. Even the ones that came with my Nexus One fit fine. These ones won't stay in for anything though. To be fair, looking very closely at the pictures posted on your article, it looks like they have changed the design of the rubber part that is supposed to hold them in... mind are clear and more dome-like than in the picture. Perhaps I got a slightly different, and poorly designed, revision.
  14. OMnomNom? I just Switched from a pair of skullcandy headphones and bought these since it was all i could afford. I was wondering if these are durable in areas such as school because i have a tendency to carry my earbuds in my backpack.

    Shouldn't be a problem.
  16. OMnomNom? how long would you say these last anyways?
  17. mertesn
mertesn I've had my set since a couple weeks before the review posted. They're still going. It just depends on how well you take care of them.
  18. Smiles NO! NO! NO! I just bought these and all I can say is they are SHIT SHIT SHIT! They only look cool, the quality is about as good as an unflushed toilet. The sound of them is so bad, it's tinny. It sounds like elevator music. 0 sound quality at all, what a cheap piece of crap. I'm returning them.
  19. ardichoke
ardichoke I feel like beating this dead horse. iFrogz has a couple different models all named similarly. The ones that I got (and complained about) are the iFrogz EarPollution Luxe. Avoid these things like the plague. They won't stay in your ear and they're not particularly comfortable. To top it all off, the way they are designed makes it so that if you have ANY ear wax, it will end up right in the electronics which eventually ruins them. I finally gave up and threw mine out last night after a frustrating night at the gym where they wouldn't stay in my ears and I couldn't hear anything out of them anyway.

The above is not the same as the iFrogz EarPollution Plugz, however, which I have never tried. After my experiences with the Luxe's though, I'm not exactly in a rush to do so.
  20. Nate My new toxic headphones keep activating voice control in the middle of my songs... any idea why?
  21. ElizabethLove i bought a pair of these last Christmas and they were awesome, but they broke and so i bought a replacement yesterday. They didn't work the same at all. The sound quality was horrible compared to my old ones. The sound didn't alternate ears like, you know how it has that cool effect with guitar or bass starting in one ear then switching off. well it didn't do that. and the vocals were fuzzy and distant. so did they change or is it just the pair? do they make two different kinds?
  22. djmeph
djmeph I have three pairs of earbuds right now. One is the Samsung earbuds that came with my Epic 4G, one is the iFrog Ear Pollution buds that I bought for $20, and another is the Skull Candy $20 earbuds with 11mm drivers. The Skull Candy earbuds are the best by far, but they don't have a built-in microphone. The Samsung earbuds are almost as good as the Skull Candy earbuds, and they have the built-in mic. The iFrog earbuds are not worth buying, they wouldn't even be worth giving away from free with a new phone. They are crap. Now I'm wondering what happened that they decided to lower their quality at some point, because of this last post. I would be very disappointed to know that they had, at some point, lowered the quality of their products, but what I do know is that as they stand now, they are crap, and you can get much better earbuds for the same price.
