I visit Digg every day, and I am always seeing articles from Cracked.com on the front page. It got me to thinking: How are they doing this?
I came up with 8 reasons why Digg is working so well for Cracked:
1. It seems like all they do is numbered lists. I mean seriously, look at their articles page: 8 of this, 7 of that, 5 of this. Whoever said Diggers were addicted to "Top x" lists was completely on the money.
2. Pop culture references abound. They completely figured out the Digg demographic - 80's stuff is big; especially music and TV shows.
3. They use digits instead of numbers written out. It makes a quicker headline and allows you to cram more into the title of the Digg.
4. They know the attention span of the internet - every day they're releasing something different.
5. They focus on the negative - The x most "Most painful", "Most absurd", "Worst", "Obnoxious", "Ridiculous", etc. Read any 20 random Digg comments through the day and you'll see that Diggers love jumping all over other people.
6. They focus on things that the Digg population likes - Girls, Video Games, Movies, and Music.
7. Quick, punchy, and humorous headlines - Perfect for one line summaries.
8. They mix it up from the usual "Top 10" - You see top 8, top 5, 6 reasons, 9 worst, etc.
People who run blogs or websites and want to get their 5 minutes of fame on Digg should take note of Cracked's success - as a study in SEO, they've definitely got it down!
