Tech Tips: Cable & Wire Organization
Why you should consider it: And I’ll tell you….they’ve stayed “stuck” for a month now. I have another tube in another case that has stayed “stuck” for over six months. It works and with a relatively light object it will be an easy way to stick it to something without a lot of effort. After all was said and done I was out of the store with less than 10 bucks spent for a pack of cable ties, the mounts and the Tac’N Stik
Where do you hide all of your cables and wires inside a PC case? Does it look
like this?
That’s an image of the backside of my PC case; a Lian Li PC76 to be exact.
Pull off the side of the case and behind the motherboard tray is a mess but
there is room for improvement…a lot of improvement.
I have 5 fan leads that are routed to the front of the case to a rheobus unit.
There is the power supply cables. There are neon light power leads. It’s just
a dog’s breakfast of wires as you can see. The question is what can be done
about it?
Hardware stores rule!
If there is a problem then most likely your neighbourhood building supply or
hardware store will have the solution. The solution comes in the form of three
items.
Is it bubble gum or is it play-doh(tm)?
I found Tac’n Stik for under 3 bucks and it looks and feels like bubble gum
or play-doh. It’s a substance that is very handy when it comes to “sticking”
things where you want them to be “stuck”. It’s also reusable and can
be easily “unstuck”. We’ll get to what I stuck with it later on.
Next is this handy little guy. It’s about a half inch square and has an adhesive
backing.
This is the reverse side and a cover sheet is simply peeled off to expose the
sticky foam padding.
What do you do with it? Well grab some cable times or “zap straps”
and they go through the unit thusly.
The plastic holder can accommodate the cable tie in either direction…north/south
or east/west.
These mounting units are quite sticky. They do stay quite stuck so once they
are on you are do for a hell of a job to get them off. Plan out your wiring
before sticking these things everywhere.
But once stuck you can bundle up any wires thusly.
Grab a pair of wire snips to trim off the excess cable tie. Scissor won’t work.
Now after you’ve thought about it for 10 or 15 seconds and planned your wiring
routes…go to town.
You may eventually take the rat’s nest of cables from this….
to this…
It’s much better and the cables are held tightly in place.
This is a stick up!
The two units on the left are the power convertors for two sets of neon lights
in the case. Speaking of which back to this odd stuff…the Tac’N Stik.
What did I do with it? If you’ve got 5 or 6 inch neon tubes in your case or
a CCFL the Tac’N Stik can come in most handy. Who wants to drill mounting holes
or there may not be room for mounting holes.
So wad up a gum sized pellet of this stuff…shape it to adhere to the neon
tube and use it like you would a chewed piece of gum to stick something.
Yes it does look like gum but it does stick to most anything so put a chunk
either end of the tube and stick it….here for example.
There’s the neon tube stuck in behind the Lian Li bezel. There’s also another
one directly above the fans that is not shown in the shot.
I also stuck a red tube in that awkward place at the back of the pc case. It’s
a spot right between the backplane of the motherboard and the rear exhaust fans.
And I’ll tell you….they’ve stayed “stuck” for a month now. I have
another tube in another case that has stayed “stuck” for over six
months. It works and with a relatively light object it will be an easy way to
stick it to something without a lot of effort.
After all was said and done I was out of the store with less than 10 bucks
spent for a pack of cable ties, the mounts and the Tac’N Stik. Pretty good huh?
Happy moddin’!
