How to: iPod video on a TV using normal RCA cables

Being that my stereo’s auxiliary port has a left and right channel I can plug into, I took my Apple branded RCA plug and went to put it into my stereo. To my confusion, I was only receiving one channel of sound. After I started switching around the plugs I realized Apple had made a proprietary plug for novice users and was sending the video and audio over uncommon colors on the RCA plug.

The old iPod video RCA cables were $20, the new RCA cables for the latest generation of video iPod Classic and video Nano are an absurd $50. To help ease the cost, here’s a break down of the Apple RCA plug and how to get it to play on your TV.
Instead of paying $20-$50, just get a three-banded eighth-inch RCA cable with red/yellow/white outputs. Typical RCA plugs send the video over the yellow channel, the right audio over the red channel, and the left audio over the white channel. Apple’s RCA cables however send the video through the red channel, the right audio through the white channel, and the left audio through the yellow channel. Here’s a diagram of the plugs in the back of your TV aligned with where your off-brand RCA plugs need to be to help:

Plugging it in is really the hard part of this. Once plugged in to the correct positions, you’ll need to set your iPod to play the video. Go to Videos>Video Settings>TV Out and turn it to On or Ask. Once done, all you need to do is hit play.
