IC LAN 2008 - Post LAN Wrapup

Another big part of the LAN every year is the Tastes of Detroit Food Tour. This year had its ups and downs, mostly due to construction and one rude restaurant manager. The food tour stops this year were:

  • Passage to India (a repeat)
  • Xochimilco Mexican Ristorante
  • Sala Thai
  • Hu Hot Mongolian Grill
  • The Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant

Passage to India is always a favorite. They let us BYOB, so we had bottles of wine and our own delicious beers to taste along with our amazing food. The service is always great here. Xochimilco was the least favorite this year - due to massive construction on I-75, many people had a very hard time getting there. The manager was pretty rude and impatient, and we all got the feeling that they were in a rush to get us out of there. Despite that, most people I talked to enjoyed the food. The margaritas and sangria were also popular.

Sala Thai was probably the most popular stop. The service was incredible. The manager and staff were very happy to have us. The food came out amazingly quick with a very attractive presentation. Of course, being stunningly delicious doesn’t hurt their reputation either. I’m pretty sure we’ll be going back to Sala Thai soon.

Hu Hot was another IC favorite. I don’t think anybody had a bad time here. The only minor complaint was that the service was a little slow (but that could have a lot to do with the fact that we had one waitress for 45+ people). The cooks were excellent and the food was great.

The Blue Nile was the last stop. This was a “love/hate” thing - there was no middle ground. It’s definitely a unique experience, but overall I think most people who went at least moderately enjoyed at least some aspect of their meal.
