I didnt want to post this in the "Digital Camera Example Thread" because I wanted to see some pictures people took as art and not just like an example of how pictures look on their digital camera.

Now let me start off by saying, I dont claim to be an artist, or a photographer or anything like that, I just have a new hobby of heading out with my digital camera and take pictures of stuff because it's fun for me, its a pretty low-cost activity, and sometimes I take pictures I really like. Here's some stuff I shot today, I'd love to see photos other people take if they're into just heading out with the camera as well, any comments/criticism/tips are also more than welcome! :) these are just 4 of them that I really liked and thought came out the best.

Some stuff I shot today, check it out, comment if youd like

The cell phone pictures just suck. We want the quality of something like an EOS or whatever the hot ticket dslr while having the convenience of being easy to use on a near point and shoot noob level. We want it to take video as well. I'm willing to invest a chunk of change in to this and I expect it to last me 3-6 years.

I lurk this thread a lot and I just get astonished at how good some of you guys are with photography and how much you know, so I thought this would be the place to ask.
Let me preface this by saying that I am not a professional photographer and probably will never be able to afford to be one. Nor do I travel a lot to need a landscape type photo camera.

But I am starting to do a little photo illustration of tech stuff to go with articles I am writing for my blog and tech knowledge site. You can find a link to my site in my profile.

So, I need to blow up big, with quality, pics of increasingly small stuff. And my budget for a good tool for this is about $250.00 shipped with accessories due to extreme budget constraints.

I have an 8 MP with 3X optical zoom camera. Point-and-shoot. I wanted something that would be in the 14-16 MP range, higher quality optical glass lense, optical zoom of 10X or greater. For retail, this is an impossible task. Such a camera costs 3-4 hundred dollars shipped or more.

However, Nikon was changing to new models of camera. So I started looking at reviews on Amazon and Newegg. Finally Amazon dropped the price of a Nikon Coolpix S8200 to about 270.00 and I started watching the price closely. When Amazon got the price down to 207.99 with free slow shipping and had 15 left, I bought what 300+ people had given an average of a 4 star review rating.

I wonder if I could have done better for the price range , some, and would like to see what other folks use for magnified blowups that are optical zoomed by the camera. I know Kwitko has a hugely photophile's camera and will probably frown at using less than the best, but I cannot afford the best or close to it.

This was long, but I had to explain and Prime did not want a review, suggested a thread instead, so here is one.

So I have this slight obsession with photographing dragonflies. It all started at EPIC when I snapped a 12-spotted skimmer by the pond, using a tiki lamp as a monopod.

I recently picked up some new equipment, including extension tubes, macro ring flash, and focusing rails. Anyone who has tried to photograph dragonflies knows it takes a great deal of patience, but in the end it pays off. Today I found a few hovering around my backyard, and I slapped 48mm worth of extension tubes and my 50mm f/1.8 onto my trusty camera. I went back and forth for what must have been a good hour. No tripod, just steady hands, breath-holding, and hopes that no wind would kick up. So yeah, I'm pretty happy with my first attempt. There's definitely room for improvement.

I thought it would be cool to share my photo workflow and see what you other photographers do.

I shoot with my Canon 30D strictly in RAW format. Then I hook it up and use Adobe Bridge (yes, I am one of the few who actually use Bridge because I think it has the best RAW download interface) to pull RAW files off the camera, put them in a folder with custom names (based on the project I'm shooting), apply basic metadata (my name and copyright from a template) to the images, and then delete them off the camera's CF card:

Next, I open DxO Optics Pro and select the folder I created in Bridge:

I make my adjustments and then process them in DxO:

Once they're done, if they're part of a "formal" set, I usually upload them to Flickr right from DxO (it can export to Flickr and Lightroom). If not, I quickly open the folder in Explorer to organize them manually. I make a folder called RAW and put the .CR2 images in there (along with the XML and DXO sidecar files), leaving only the finished JPG versions in the folder. That way, I end up with a folder that has the project name (Expo Icrontic 2012, for example) that is full of .JPG versions of the images. If I wanted to go back to the source, the RAW files are in a subfolder of the main one. Having the JPG versions accessible by named folder makes it easy to then go on to share them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, G+, or upload them here to IC.

After that, they go in my long-term Photo folder on my 2tb internal drive:

From there, they get backed up nightly to my 2tb external HD (because I firmly believe that backup MUST be a part of ANY photographer's workflow):

What's your routine?

Me and my girlfriend of 6 years are planning a trip to California National Parks. Its going to be an important trip because I will be proposing to her.

I want to rent a better body and lens. Im still gonna bring my XSi with me because of all the accessories that I have for it. (filters, battery grip, memory cards etc). It will be my backup for if the rented camera runs out of battery/CF storage.

But we will probably be going to Big Sur, Yosemite, Sequoia NP, and San Francisco.
I love taking landscape pictures and that is what I will be doing, along with portraits of me and her.

I posted a topic about this on ThePhotoForums, but I figured I would ask everyone's opinion here too.

I really had my mind set on the 5Dmkii. I really want to use that full-frame sensor. But others have suggested the 7D over it. Because of the better AF system, and the cropped sensor giving me more "reach" with the lenses. (which I feel could be a bad thing, because I love wide angle) And I don't think that the AF system will bother me that much, as my XSi is obviously not a great AF system as it is, so I won't feel like I am missing much. Im used to it.

I was thinking about renting a 5Dmkii and the Canon EF 17-40mm F/4L.
Along with bringing my nifty fifty 50mm Prime. EF 50mm.

And my XSi for my filters and a backup camera (my fitlers are not gonna fit on that nice L lens)

What do you all think? 7D or 5DmII?

I already have a CF card, and a flash (since the 5D doesn't have a pop-up flash) so that really doesn't bother me either.

New Sony camera HX9V. So far I'm impressed with all of the options on this camera. This camera can take incredible night pictures with out the need of a tripod. I'll post some videos from you tube once I'm done uploading
Some of the pics were taken in Galveston Texas.

Don't tell my GF I uploaded this pic :D

My wife has a 2 year old XSi that's completely stock, including the lens (eek!).

Over the past year she has really started taking a lot of pictures and is looking into some upgrades. She's hinted that these are the items she want to get first (eg, Christmas).

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens - http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU/ref=wl_it_dp_v?ie=UTF8&coliid=IJJRPUG7M7N73&colid=6OQNMLH6RGOE

Sunpak PF30X/DigiFlash 2800 E-TTL II Electronic Flash - http://www.amazon.com/Sunpak-DigiFlash-Electronic-Digital-Cameras/dp/B004E2XC64/ref=wl_it_dp_v?ie=UTF8&coliid=ISBOWYRSQI5VC&colid=6OQNMLH6RGOE

I know pretty much nothing about DSLRs let alone upgrades. So I come to you  I know prime, snark, and others are big photo enthusiasts.

Are those good upgrades/purchases? Is there something else you would recommend?

I'm looking at spending $150ish, up to $200 if needed - I just want to make sure I get something that is going to be a good purchase and not a worthless upgrade.

Thanks! :jared:

Snark and I had an idea tonight.

In this thread, post an idea for a photo, one a day. Each day, we'll pick tomorrow's subject.

Anybody who wants to participate can then take photos of said subject, and post their best shot in this thread's companion.

The idea is not to compete to see who has the best photo (it's all subjective anyway), the idea is to inspire this community's photographers to go out and practice, shoot something, push their boundaries, and experiment.

Sometimes all we need is a little inspiration. :vimp:

Didn't see one started yet. I also played with the effects a bit more and ended up with something more distorted from reality, but I liked how the balloon looked metallic and super saturated with color.

CB: How fun. I like how you played with the crop to give the picture a very vertical quality - especially because the balloons are anchored to the ground. Makes me feel like they WANT to fly. I may have rotated the pic just a bit so the ground is level.

Snark: I really love the reflection of the little figure, and I ESPECIALLY love (dont know if this was your intention) the lovely way the color of the background balloons mimic a sort of real world for your character: light blue sky, dark blue water, brown ground, yellow sun. I may have tried to play with the yellow of the far background balloon to see if I could get it to match better the yellow balloons in the figure. The background balloon is a bit gray/green, and the little yellow balloons seem to be bright and warm. Thats completely a personal thing, I think, but it just caught my eye.
