Computer running extremely slow among other problems

edited February 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Well ever since I installed the latest nvidia forceware beta drivers my computer startup has been extremely slowed down, as well as now not having sounds in battlefield 1942.

so i re-downloaded the old drivers, installed, and then restarted and the comp started in 640 x 480, it took a few minutes to go from the windows logon screen to the desktop at which point it asked me about the installation, i tried that and it took way too long and didnt look like it was doing anything. so i hit the reset button on my computer.

at which point i still dealt with the lag.

i don't even see the thing to my drivers any more so i'm going to use the drivers that came with the video card because it is extremely laggy, i barely got on the website.

if anyone has any suggestions to fixing these problems please let me know.

thanks,

stubbs

using the vid card drivers that came on the cd is a bad idea, not only because they suck but also because its more likely that your problem is either spyware, virus, or memory related.

so im going to pull a prime and say run memtest and go post a HJT log in the spyware forums

well, right now i reinstalled the original drivers (or at least thought i did), and it ended up making it worse.

now my computer keeps giving me the found new hardware thing and that isnt even working...

like every time i scroll online it takes a second for the frame to load.

the immense lag is something i've never experienced on this or my old computer, this is disugsting.

i'm really just waiting to see if i can fix it or if a response has something that will help me fix it.

and help will be greatly appreciated.

    ---
my computer isn't even recognizing the video card.

i mean wtf should i do?

okay wow, somehow my comp just recognized it out of nowhere and the lag stopped....

i reinstalled the 66.93 drivers and a few minutes later, back to normall...

    or so it seems

okay and now this happened before but its back again.

i dont get the immense browser lag, but now it wont run anything UNTIL this thing pops up that says 'windows generic processes' win 32 has failed....

    then everything runs.

    but i mean wtf.

and now i'm getting 'failed to open sound input device another program may have it open already'

    WHAT IS GOING ON?

    wow....

and also after my computer stop lagging and i can actually run stuff, which takes a few minutes.

that's what pops up at the top.

    ---

so basically i'd like to fix this lag and find out if there's something i can do about the log if there's anything wrong with it.

seriously some help would be extremely appreciated.

    thanks guys,

and also i tried reformatting with the disc in either the d or e drives and nothing happened...

it's the xp home edition 2002 version.

i don't really care about reformatting until i know it's the last resort but i tried to a few minutes ago.

didn't work, so i'm gonna see what i can do.

i mean i'm not lagging now, but the startup lag, has never occurred before today.

i ended up getting reformat to work by settings my bios to use my cd drive first instead of floppy.

i reformmated and everything seems to be running smoothly.

I may be wrong, but I had something quite similar to what you're describing one time and it turned out that directdraw was hosed. Not direct3d, directdraw, which is what's used for general display in windows. Everything including the mouse would lag all over the place. Windows took forever to be painted to my screen etc. DXDIAG told me directdraw was disabled. I yanked every remnant of the display drivers I could find, reinstalled them and then DX and that resolved it. I know you already fixed by reloading your machine, which makes sense, but thought I'd throw my 2 cents in anyway.
