Help with daughter's computer

I've run spybot, adaware, ewido suite, and norton antivirus scans and corrected suggested entries. My daughter's computer is running very slow. Would you please review the HJT log posted below and tell me if I should fix any entries?

I would suggest you Uninstall FireDeamon if you have no use for it, as its seems to be a security risk.

It is still running slow. I'm going to clear the caches again and see if that helps. I've run several different virus and spyware scans. Can't find anything.

Do this:

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

If the computer is still slow, you could try disabling items on startup through MSCONFIG and see if that helps.

I hate to say this but I would also Uninstall Norton and get AVG. I find Norton to slow things down alot but it is your choice.

Could you explain the "disabling items on startup through MSCONFIG" process? How do I do that? I've heard about folks editing the items listed in startup but I've never done that myself.

Sure, no problem.

I have have a computer and a laptop here and I always disable things that are needed on startup.

Go to Start > Run > type msconfig > Click the Startup Tab.

It is safe to disable everything as what is needed will automatically startup. However, don't disable your Anti-Virus or Firewall.

After you have done that, click Apply, Close and Restart

The free version is as good as any. You'll still get full-time protection, automatic scanning and updates, email protection, etc.

I know several people who have paid for AVG, but only out of gratitude for it being a fine program. Give it a shot on one of your computers and see how you like it.

A semi-related question, but what are the specs of your daughters machine? I'm mostly interested in amount of RAM, speed of CPU, and HD capacity. Also, how much free space is there on the HD?

I just want to add that you shouldn't be running two or more Anti-Viruses on any one computer as that could also cause problems. However, if you can't uninstall Norton to try AVG, then just download AVG with Norton, but do not keep both for a long period of time.

A semi-related question, but what are the specs of your daughters machine? I'm mostly interested in amount of RAM, speed of CPU, and HD capacity. Also, how much free space is there on the HD?

The computer is a celeron 1.7 GHZ with 256 MB RAM. It has two 40 GB Maxtor hard drives with 25 GB and 38 GB free.

I'm going to uninstall the norton then download and install the free version of AVG to see the difference it makes on this machine.

More RAM would be helpful, though I'd say that if the system just seemed to mysteriously slow down all at once then that is not the full answer.

A cheap way to get more RAM is to get rid of Norton - it's a real memory hog. AVG will only need a fraction of the RAM that Norton uses.

I would also recommend running a full test on both of the hard drives. You can get it free from Maxtor. Over Thanksgiving I replaced my daughter's drive when it tested bad. Her computer would run, but had symptoms similar to this one. If they do test out to be OK it'll be nice to have one less thing to worry about.

You've found AVG to be as effective or more effective than Norton in identifying, preventing, and cleaning viruses?

Absolutely. It's running on all my machines, plus those of my GF, daughter, sister, two nephews, and my dad. No A-V program is perfect, but I'd say AVG is easily as good as any other one.

What about the graphics card. Is it shared graphics?

I have a laptop here (that i'm posting from now) that has 256MB of RAM and its got 64MB shared graphics which means that total RAM is 192MB. With that, there are 4 user accounts on here. All that makes the laptop slow and annoying.


Right-click My Computer > Properties > Under the General Tab at the bottom, it should mention how much RAM you have.

It says plug and play monitor on RADEON 7000 series.

That could be either built-in or an add-on card.

Look on the back of the computer where the monitor is hooked up. If the cord is attached lower down on the back and is oriented horizontally then you have a regular card using its own memory. If the cord is attached higher on the back (near where the mouse, keyboard, etc is connected) and is oriented vertically then you have onboard video using some of your system memory.

To be positive, go to Control Panel>>System and see what it shows for memory down near the bottom of the screen.
