256MB Sapphire Radeon X1950XT or 512MB XFX 7950GT XT

I need your help people in chosing one of the above cards. I am torn btw them as a stop gap till 2nd gen Dx10 cards hit the street.

The 256MB Sapphire Radeon X1950XT is £176.12

While the 512MB XFX 7950GT XT is on sale for £182.13.

I am leaning towards the X1950XT, noise is an issue, but i might have to live with it and power supply is no problem as i have a 600w psu. Any Suggestions welcome.

will the 256MB v 512Mb make a diff in video editing?

many thanks.

Thrax i'm sorry to bother you one more time on this issue.

Just saw the HIS ATI Radeon X1950 XT ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT @£199.74 is this a better buy than the 256MB Sapphire Radeon X1950XT i@ £176.12?

Was looking at noise level and HIS is said to be quiet. Hoping to purchase one of the above on Monday.

It's slightly quieter. If that's worth £23 extra for you, go get 'em, tiger. :)

I am unable to confirm Thrax's finding as I have yet to see any Benchmarks based on the X1950XT with 256MB. Most benchmarks on the market cover the X1950Pro and the X1950XTX. The Pro being the most similar to the X1950XT is slower than a 7950GT 512MB. But overall both cards would perform very well.

Now i am really getting confused. i need to make a decision soon & was looking at the HIS ATI Radeon X1950 XT ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT Heatpipe 256MB

Take Thrax's advice and get the ATI. (Unless you ever plan to switch to linux later down the road)

Many thanks. This is just to tie me in till i build a new rig and transfer this card into it.

I am going to wait for the 2nd or 3rd gen DX10 cards and i will eventually run linux just waiting for centos 5 to come out and it will be hopefully with a DX10 card.

Why would you say that? Any support to back it up? I am not saying you or Thrax are wrong, I just can find any supporting info on the chip that says the X1950XT is faster. What I have seen is the core speed and setup is just like the X1950Pro which is much slower than the 7950GT. unless they boosted something in the X1950XT than I would assume they are at par with each other, and both items would be a good buy. Now the X1950XTX blows the 7950GT out of the water....

The x1950xt is the same as an x1900xt 512 except with faster memory (1800vs 1440) and hdcp support. It is a 16pipline 48 shader part. The pro is a 12 pipline 36 shader part.

Look up reviews on the x1900xt if you want to see, its usually faster than 7950.

You can see the specs of the HIS x1950xt on newegg.

I just picked one up myself.

    Cheers,

    Steve

I have been looking for reviews on this chip and all that turns up is X1950XTX benchmarks. If you have a few links to a X1950XT review, I would love to check it out.

Pex gave me this link that has all the info on the X1950XT.

    ATI Radeon X1950XT GPU (R580)
384 million transistors on 90nm fabrication process
    Core Clock: 625MHz
    Memory Clock: 1800MHz DDR
    48 pixel shader processors
    16 pixel pipelines
    8 vertex shader processors

One of the only reviews online can be found here

In all but 2 of the benchmarks the X1950XT does beat out the 7950GT...
