Considering a small upgrade

I am considering a small upgrade on my newest rig.
At present I have an Athlon64 X2 4200+ and 2 GB Corsair PC6400 DDR2 memory.
But that is a bit too slow compared to my Geforce 8800 GTX.
That is why I am considering some minor changes, and the prices are really low.
The pricetag on my CPU and memory has dropped by 2/3 since I bought them.
I am looking at a Athlon64 X2 5000+ Black Edition (Unlocked) and. 2 GB Corsair PC8500.
Then I will do some OC'ing.
But is it a wise upgrade?
I know I am headed down a dead-end, but that is the case most of the time when buying hardware. Everything becomes obsolete at some point or another.
But I reckon it will be too expensive to upgrade to a Core2 Duo system compared to upgrading what I have.
