annoying bug

edited December 2007 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I let my brother use my laptop over the weekend since I was out of town visiting some friends. Anyway I came back to realize that he managed to get some sort of virus/trojan/spyware thing on here. Anyway I did some searching and I found some people who had the same problems. Unless I have to, I don't want to download like 3 or 4 more programs to remove this. Thanks for any help guys

Every time I open a new window in IE a window pops up saying

"Critical system error!
You're system is probably infected with the latest version of Trojan.Zlob-X.a
Full system optimization will greatly increase youre computer's preformance and prevent data loss.

Click OK to download antispyware software!(recommended)
"

I pretty much realized right away that it is some sort of adware thing. I accidentally clicked OK one time and it asks you to download something. I ran norton, adaware and they did nothing.

Heres my hijack this log

Hi tmh88. Please get latest version of HijackThis (compatible with Vista) from here.
• Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
• Click on Install.
• It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
• Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Save the log to a convenient location as you'll need to post it soon.
• Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
• Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Post a fresh HijackThis log.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Post the SmitfraudFix log and a fresh HijackThis log.

Do you have a firewall? Is your Norton AntiVirus working properly?

Thank you, tmh88. Please note that only one bad file was found; there is also some suspicious items in the HijackThis log. But in all probability we are able to remove them, and clean up your computer. There is no need to reformat your hard drive. However, you are free to do so if you want to. Please let me know what is your decision.

:)

• Click the Update icon
• Click Start update
• Wait until updates are downloaded
• Click the Scanner icon

• Make sure that under "How to act?" read Quarantine (If not, click the text and choose Quarantine)
• Under "How to scan?" all checkboxes should be ticked
• Under "Reports" unselect Automatically generate report after every scan and Only if threats were found.
• Under "What to scan?" select Scan every file
• Click the Shield icon
• Under the "Resident shield is" click active to make it inactive
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware (do not scan yet)

Step 3

Reboot into Safe Mode

I've been browsing around for a while and the popups seem to be gone.

Did you write a tutorial or find one, and then copy and paste it to help me? Your directions were by far the most detailed, layed out, that I have seen on here. No offence to the other guys, but I mean look at the bullets and outline. Awesome job vekarppe, thanks a ton for the help.

Hello. :)

We're goin' to remove sysdivx.dll in safe mode and next fix your HijackThis Log. Afther the steps, your computer ought to be clean.

Please do the followings...

Step 1

Seeing your hidden files and system files in Vista is not much different than in XP. Here are the step-by-step directions. Remember that system files are hidden for a reason. Don't go messin' around with stuff.

1. Click the round blue Start thing in the left corner
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Click Show hidden files and folders
6. If you want to see system files as well, unclick Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
7. Click OK

Step 2

Reboot into Safe Mode
• Restart your computer.
• When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed.
• When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
• Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
• Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
• When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.
Step 3

Find & remove the file,

C:\Windows\System32\sysdivx.dll

Step 4

Reboot the computer back to normal mode.

Step 5

Start Hijackthis (with administrator privileges). Click the Do system scan only button.

Check the following items if they are still present, some may not be

O2 - BHO: Video DivX 3.12 - {F02B8C83-C817-4EA2-A499-29257DA0373A} - C:\Windows\System32\sysdivx.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [?????????] ??????????????e

Close browsers, and all other open programs. Click Fix Checked.

Step 6

Post a fresh HijackThis log.
