Very Bad Fake Out Of Memory Virus After Login, Help Needed

Hi, i currently run windows XP professional edition on my laptop and i have a problem. I know most viruses are just small ones which make computer go abit slow, but this really isn't one of them.

On XP it is very unlikely to get the blue screen of death, but i have been getting it alot. I will briefly explain as i don't have alot of time on my laptop, it could go off anytime.

My older brother downloaded something off the net the other day and messed my laptop right up, this means alot of programs i then ran from yesterday seemed to make my laptop work alot harder.

If i leave the laptop off for 30minutes, it will stay on for 1 and a half to 2 hours max, on my laptop with 120gb hard drive, this isn't long enough to do a complete full virus scan using avg or panda.

I tried AVG in safe mode this morning and after about 1 and half hours i got the out of memory screen and the computer shut down, same happened with panda web scan last night when i tried.

The virus file i speak of which seems to of messed my system up is winctrl32.dll and i heard this is very dangerous.

I have tried numerous programs to shift it, i tried scanning system32 directory with avg, i tried using unhackme470 and reanimator and spybot search and destroy, i use these when my computer first starts and they said my computer is now clear, but when i reboot my machine, the viruses seem to come back, so something is triggering them off.

As mentioned i cannot do a full virus scan, my laptop will remain on for 1 hour 30mins to 2 hours max, a virus scan on my hard drive will take 3 hours about.

When doing an AVG scan earlier in safe mode, it picked up on alot of viruses, but because in safe mode i could only do a command line scan, so in order to fix any errors i had to wait for it to finish, however my laptop had rebooted by then.

I noticed in safe mode my memory usage was only about 100mb and my laptop has 512mb of physical memory, so my laptop is fine on the memory front, but something is telling my laptop it is out of memory. I checked me cpu usage and it's between 50-100 all the time when doing an AVG 8.0 virus scan, i prefer 7.5 as it's less memory hastle.

Can anybody recommend any quick and easy scans i can do? i don't have the time for these 2-3 hour scans as my laptop will just restart itself again, just until i get this virus removed.

I tried the scans trecommended in the sticky topic at the top, i did them all up until the panda scan because my laptop bailed out on about 36%, although i think it was really 90% as scan looked almost done. So i cannot use this big in depth virus scan searches at the minute :(.

I downloaded hijackthis again and here is my log:

    Hi

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link 1
    alternate download link 2
    • Double-click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • If you have trouble with the update process, please download the latest updates here.
    • Double-click the mbam-rules.exe file on your desktop and let it update the application.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart. (see extra note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Please copy and paste the entire report in your next reply. :)
    Extra note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:
    1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

ok thanks for the reply back dude, i did manage to get the malware scan to work in safemode, it went all the way through and found 22 errors, this has helped a little, my laptop remains on longer now but still hasn't shifted the full virus.

I downloaded comboxfix.exe and ran that, it got up until test 38 completed, after that it just didn't do anything, after i told my task manager to appear, it came on 10 minutes later and said 100% of my CPU was in use. The scan was meant to take 10 minutes but i had it on a good half hour, after which i rebooted my machine.

My logs now show as follows:

Ok that is what i have done now, the laptop seems to be stable although fan power is still high, it will probs last a good few hours now without the physical memory error message. What scan's do i need to do next? i've just ditched AVG 8.0 and put on avast on instead due to high memory usage.

    thanks

On a badly infected machine Combofix needs more time.

Did you get a log of any kind?

    Should be Located here: C:\Combofix.txt

If you have no log for me, Run Combofix in safemode and post the results. ( log )
  • edited June 2008
ok dude, i shall do that tomorrow and edit my post so watch this post.

As for the virus, it is now gone, i did a scan with avast today while i was out and it picked up 10 virus files which could infect, so i removed them.

thanks for the help and i know viruses arn't removed until you are totally sure, so i will do this combo test in safemode.

Unfortunetly the combofix file was in c:\ but it got removed during the scan, it never finished and as i say got stuck on test 38 completed which is when i rebooted, but i did this when the virus was on, i shall do another one in safe mode tomorrow for you tomorrow.

ok i tried doing combofix last night and it didn't work yet again. This time it got up to 41 completed and then just hung, i think this may be down to my screensaver coming on after 10minutes, but in safe mode if you change it, it automatically changes back.

Anyways i booted my laptop up this morning, went back into safe mode, tried it again and it said recovery consol was already installed.

I then booted up again, selected recovery consol from the boot menu, selected the windows directory i wished to recovery, typed in my password and then there it was.....the blue screen of death.

This time it was complaining about something to do with usb and a file which i forget the name of.

The good thing is, i think the virus has now gone, but the bad thing is, this combofix doesn't seem to want to finish and post any type of log. I do have a quarantined log but this isn't the log your after. However saying this, my clock has been reset back, so i wonder if it did actually finish, i am not sure on this.

Do you recon i should be ok now? but that blue screen when i go to do recovery is abit worrying as it should of worked. I made sure i downloaded xp pro and service pack 2 recovery.
