So it looks like using Amazon's cloud computing cluster to fold isn't cost effective, so I went shopping:

4-cored-node cluster

base node: $478
each add'l node: $418
per-node stats:
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model HH80562PH0568M - OEM
  • OCZ Reaper HPC 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR1066A2GK - Retail
  • XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - Retail
  • GIGABYTE GA-P31-S3G LGA 775 Intel P31 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
  • Antec earthwatts EA380 380W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply - Retail
Price:
4 cores: $478 (9.6 Ghz) $49.79 per Ghz
8 cores: $896 (19.2 Ghz) $46.67 per Ghz
12 cores: $1314 (28.8 Ghz)$45.63 per Ghz
16 cores: $1732 (38.4 Ghz)$45.10 per Ghz
20 cores: $2150 (48 Ghz)$44.79 per Ghz

and for comparison...
2-cored-node cluster
base node: $424
each add'l node: $364
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6750 - Retail
  • OCZ Reaper HPC 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR1066A2GK - Retail
  • GIGABYTE GA-P31-S3G LGA 775 Intel P31 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
  • Antec earthwatts EA380 380W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply - Retail
Price:
2 cores: $424 (5.32 Ghz) $79.70 per Ghz
4 cores: $788 (10.64 Ghz) $74.06 per Ghz
6 cores: $1152 (15.96 Ghz)
8 cores: $1516 (21.28 Ghz)
10 cores: $1880 (26.6 Ghz) $70.68 per Ghz

Discuss...? Would probably need a linux guru to get it all working.

    Nice research.... hmmmmm....

The-4 cored cluster obviously wins the value proposition. With the team funds that are still held by Icrontic, we could probably afford an 8 core version.

We need a clear idea of our funds.... what do we have in our fund and in the IC fund yet to be transferred?

Wouldn't it be nice to have the ICx Cluster come online and take the #1 spot within a month!!! That would be a spark!!!

Team fund under my management is currently at $244.94

Still in the "yet to be transferred" bucket is going to have to be answered by Brian.

Let's get this going. No new machines have been built in months and several have been retired. Is there no more gumption on this team? :(

We need to get some $$$ from the Icrontic fund transfered to the team fund... then I have NO problem pushing this concept through. It's good use of our idle $$$ and shows that we still want to help Stanford.

and it's scalable. As money comes in, more nodes can be added.

Do we have enough to build at least the base node?

We're currently at $264.06. How much does the base node cost?

    //edit: I scrolled up.
Nope, looks like we need an infusion of cash to buy the base node.

Let's get on Brian to see what's in that "to be transferred" bucket.
