How many syllables in "Fire?"

The Oxford English Dictionary, Merriam-Webster dictionary, Dictionary.com and Wiktionary.com all indicate that it is one syllable.

That said, do you believe it is one or two? Why?

I would add a legitimate response to this thread, but I can no longer find the reply button.

That said, it's one. Unless you say "Fi-yur"

Write Haikus and you'll discover hundreds of words you think are two-syllable but are actually one.

I think it's one. I thought it was one before I even looked it up. It sounds like one to me.

(Also, I love the OED. I just wanted to add that.)

Not here too. Come on, we had it and finished it.

That said, in my pronunciation, it's fy-er, not fyr. Your tongue makes a distinctly different move when transferring from the long i to the er, which means I can count the syllables.

It seems pretty clearly to be pronunciation-dependent, and if it's impossible for you to allow that both may be valid, then I will point you to the ridiculous pronunciation of nu-cu-lar as an accepted variant of nuclear according to Merriam-Webster, the law of the American English land.

I'm gonna have to agree with Snark on the "i to the er" thing. Sounds like two syllables.

Not a change I saw until yesterday morning.

While agree there can be multiple pronunciations of words, it doesn't fit what I consider to be a very distinct movement between the letters of the word in my mind.

Fire. One syllable that sounds like two.
    Acid + fire + 60's = PhiYuh

It's one. And it is a Homonym with the word "far". At least that's how the folks in backwoods pronounce it.

On a side note: Pyre, Sire, Ire, Lyre, and Tire are all also only one syllable. Crier and Liar are each two syllables. If you are thinking of Fire like Liar instead of like Lyre, then therein lay the confusion.

There is an incredibly small difference between Lyre [lahyuhthinsp.pngr] (one syllable) and Liar [lahy-er] (two syllables). No matter how much those two words sound alike when spoken casually, they are, in fact, composed of different phonemes with different origins. Honestly, this is one of those strange, but interesting, linguisting phenomenons (pun intended) that comes about in English because of its hodgpodge origins.

I believe we are lacking the true authority on this issue, a certain Mr. Beavis has yet to respond. Until I hear from him I'll be on the fence.

I just had this debate on Reddit, and a Google search for supporting evidence turned up this thread!

It's too good to leave in the past, so... bump.

I know I responded already but do it like they teach you in grade school with the whole clapping thing. You'll see it's two syllables.
  • ThraxThrax Professional Shill, Watch Slut, Mumble Hivemind Drone Austin, TX Icrontian
The clapping mechanism presumes you're saying it correctly in the first place, it's not proof.
  • WinfreyWinfrey waddafuh Missouri Icrontian
Pretty sure you don't want the clap.

1, always one. You're supposed to pronounce it like "fyre". Also enjoyed reading this thread for the first time today.
