I put up a Picasa album with the other photos from this shoot.

It was tough to pick just one.

For whatever reason, the grapes keep looking "fake" to me. I was worried it was my post, but here is the original and my post pic looks as natural as the original, so maybe they were just crazy grapes.

Nate_LapT: awesome. What a great find. Did you set it up?

Snarkasm: It looks really gorgeous and the sky really opens up, but with the barn being so dark in the black and white, its hard for me to get a sense of "abandonment" from it. I think when I look closer the door of the barn is ajar and in disrepair, but it seems a bit buried in the shadows.

CB: you have some great shots in the picasa set. Where is this? When I first saw your building i thought it looked just like a building on a college campus with the great red brick and ivy. Then I looked closely and realized the whole building was falling apart. what a great subject for your photo. definite abandoned.

Gargoyle: I love the shade of green in the photo and the bookcase is really interesting. The room gives a good feeling of empty. I think it would be great to see the chair in better focus, but other than that I really like it.

nope, it was like that on my way home last night. It was just one of those awesome days where everything fell into place.
I had another photo I took for this day, but I can now use it for another post later, which it fits better anyways.

    Thanks. :)

The bike-trail I ride follows an old railroad track. There a bunch of ruinous building near the trail: Vestiges of the railroad era. Most of them are just old foundations or crane arms sticking helplessly out of the side of a hill. The old Peters Cartridge Co. factory still stands, however. I stop here when I ride north from the Loveland trail entrance, and it makes the round-trip an even 13 mi. I'll sit in the shadow of these ruins for several minutes thinking about how neat they are, and listening to my father (who usually joins me) tell me again how much he would love to turn the place into loft apartments if only he had the capital.

Many of the windows are broken, and there are trees growing up through the middle of several buildings, but most of the buildings are in surprisingly good shape, especially the tower and smokestack.

There is a good view of it in Bing Maps birds-eye view.

You know, snark, I take it back. I looked at the large version of the photo on another screen and it looks great. I will remember my other monitor is no good for looking at photos.

Marushka: great detail on the grape and the moisture on the plate!

Nate: I love the cart sitting in the otherwise pristine environment.

Snark: I like it, but I can't see a bigger version on Flickr, so I'm missing the detail that I think is there. I like the clouds and power lines, they add balance compared to a big open sky.

CB: I love the tile in the building and the ivy; they bring a lot more color to a photo of an abandoned building than I would expect. We also have a lot of abandoned industrial space along our Olentangy River bike trail, although I don't remember seeing anything quite so interesting. I'll have to check it out again

Prime: I can almost smell the cedar of the box. Nicely done! Very personal, too; thanks for sharing that with us.

Me: Needed a tripod, badly. I think the chair is out of focus because I probably wasn't holding it still enough for ISO-100 without flash (I tried to sharpen it a bit to compensate). I'm also saddened at how much grain there is in the photo even on the lowest ISO setting. I need a new camera, but a little more time to set up the photo would have gone a long way, too.

Mebbe I need to start putting up the larges.

Marushka - very nice photo. I immediately thought of drawing a face on the grape and making him point away. :)

Nate - nice isolation, but it could do with some better framing. A dead-center grocery cart isn't terribly compelling.

CB - very cool building. It's a little less sharp up top, but very cool subject matter nonetheless. Might consider desaturating it a little bit for effect - the colors detract a little bit from the abandonment, making it look alive.

Garg - definitely blurry, but the colors are pretty great. Window's a little overexposed, but it's probably the better choice rather than being properly- or underexposed. Good shot, just keep it steady next time. :)

Prime - excellent shot. Great color, good lighting. The focus looks like it's on the floor of the box rather than on the ring itself, and it looks like the ring had some good markings on it; that's probably the only thing I'd pick on. Good job, even if the subject is saddening.

Nomad - great mood. The focus falls away at either end of the building, which is nice. I envy your choice of subject - I really want to go urban spelunking in that place.

Marushka: I like it; no critique

Nate: MUCH better. Now you're getting somewhere

Snark: Powerful photo. I love it. Is that HDR black and white?

CB: Awesome. It makes me wish your camera was higher res / lower noise, cause it's a perfect shot that is limited only by your gear.

Garg: It's a well-composed and well-lit shot that would have benefited from a tripod, but you already know that. Great work.

Nomad: The only problem with the "antique" look is that if you don't know the train station is abandoned (as we all do), you might not be able to tell the building is abandoned strictly on the merits of your photo; you can't see the sun shining through the broken windows or the fence around it, for example. In a way, your photo sort of makes it look like it did in its glory days.

It's a great photo; it just doesn't scream "abandonment" to me.

    prime: Its beautiful.

nomad: I disagree with prime, actually. I think because of the way the shot is colored and shot upwards, I thought "haunted hotel." Abandoned by people, but inhabited by scary ghosts. Or maybe just jack nicholson with an axe.

Prime, it's not HDR, just a better black and white than I normally do. Decided to play with the individual color levels for once.

I also said almost exactly the same thing as Brian about the train station - I had it fully typed out and deleted it. The thing that changed my mind was the lack of people. The building does look magnificent, not abandoned, but the complete lack of life in the picture portrayed the abandonment more the longer I looked at it.

note, that cart is still downtown, someone put it up though, but its still pretty much where I found it last night.

I actually increased the saturation a bit in post. I thought that the colors, especially the cyan tiles, were what really gave it character.

I guess I didn't necessarily think 'sad' when I thought about 'abandoned'.

    Sorry it's late :)

marushka - very good idea, execution. i definitely feel bad for that lone grape. i think if you could have cropped out those couple grapes in the background it would have been less distracting. Maybe also external light, rather than the camera flash.

Nate - good idea, needs better framing!

    Snark - I like it a lot

cb - very good, definitely has that falling apart feeling to it.

garg - focus / motion blur makes it a bit soft. window's a bit distracting. very good setup though.

prime - i think it's a bit "bright" for the abandonment theme

nomad - i think the focus is a bit soft around the edges. really my only comment though.

Might want to remember that lens cover next time. Also dont open the camera backin the sun to see if the tape is still feeding.

ah shwaip, its gasworks. you have my heart.

I think the most important detail of abandonment is that rusty and crappy paint job and I think, for me, that gets just a little lost in the B/W. Maybe a color version would have shown that a little more.

No, that was the problem. The tape WASN'T feeding the entire time, just didn't realize it till the end.

gnome queen: the color is fantastic and the feel of the whole photo is perfect. gorgeous photo, definitely worth the wait! It also kinda fits the theme of thwarted since you even mentioned you were "foiled" by your film camera!

    My (very) late submission:

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ghoosdum/3822952157/&quot; title="Tired bus by ghoosdum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3547/3822952157_9b76db58b2.jpg&quot; width="355" height="500" alt="Tired bus" /></a>

I had the photo taken in plenty of time, but the internet connection at the hotel I was staying the day of this challenge wouldn't let me upload a single pic.

Apparently a double-decker bus hobbyist in Britain liked my photo as well. He asked for more, which I sent, and then he was able to figure out this bit of trivia:
The bus was new in 1956 and operated in Bournemouth on our south coast. Sold to a dealer and exported to the United States in 2/76 where it has been unreported until now 33 years later.

Cool to see info like this come out of the project!

Oh, and if anyone else is interested, I dumped the rest of the (untouched) photos in Picasa:

Along with an abandoned panel truck nearby.
