Nexplore pop-ups, sites redirected

edited November 2009 in Spyware & Virus Removal
so my issue is as follows:
i primarily use firefox when browsing the internet. now, whenever i search things (almost always via google), internet explorer (which no longer appears in my programs list in my start menu) pops up with 2 or 3 windows at a time with "related" sites to whatever it is i just searched. a lot of them say nexplore. also, if i search things on google in firefox, and click on any of the results, the window that pops up will redirect with the icon in the top left of of the firefox page tab turning to a globe. i haven't noticed any other issues with the computer, it just makes for some frustrating researching... :mad2:
oh, and i've also ran malwarebyte's anti-malware, spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, and what seems like 75 million other programs with no success thus far.

hijackthis log (and i always have a lot of programs running so i'm sorry for the clutter):

    Hello,

    Nexplore is a search engine. I know that it provides a toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer. Check if the Nexplore toolbar is not in the list of engines available in the search bar. Also from the log I noticed traces of Mirar adware. That might be a part of the problem too. Have you tried Spyware Doctor? Downlaod link. Also downlaod CCleaner and remove all junk files, cookies and etc. Oh, and by the way Revo Uninstaller may help as well.

    definitely not one of the search bars. i have a pretty good grip on my computer; no toolbars or anything clutter my browsers unless i want them there. it's not always nexplore popping up either. like i said, i use firefox, but the pop-ups are in internet explorer. for instance, when i opened this site, 2 sites popped up named "free education guide..." etc. spyware doctor didn't work. i've used ccleaner before, reran it now, no luck. it looks like revo uninstaller is just an organized program meant to uninstall programs i've installed already? what's going on with my computer seems like more of a virus than an accidentally downloaded program.

    any other suggestions? :(

    Hello, and sorry for the late reply.

    A few things before we start....
    1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully.
    2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
    4. If you have to go away for an extended period of time, let me know.
    5. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear".
    (Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

    =========

    Your version of HijackThis is outdated.
    Please download the current version here:
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download
    Please save it in a convenient permanent folder,
    and be sure the next log is with the newer version.

    =========

    Now let's have you download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for downloading and instructions for running the tool:

    Go here ======> A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix <====== Go here

    Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.This applies to XP Pro and XP Home users only.If you have SP3 installed you will need to use the download meant for SP2.

    The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

    Once installed, you should get a prompt that says:

    The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:

    (1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    (2) Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

    When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

    Please include C:\ComboFix.txt and a new HijackThis log for further review, so that we may continue cleansing the system.

    Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a qualified security analyst who is experienced in the use of Combofix. Misuse can cause serious computer problems.
