Costuming, Sewing and Crafting

I'm not sure how many of you sew or make costumes. But no matter how many of you do, don't, want to learn, want help or even commissions, I'm the gal for you and hopefully i can convert some of you to the sewing side!

Costuming is my favorite geely thing to do. Sure I do plenty of gaming, but it's the costumkes that go with them that make me sqwee! I actually held a panel this past Youmacon about how to thrift/find a costume for the sewing/money impaired.

It would be lovely if asny of you who are interested post costumes you have done or like to make, sewing or craft "level" or past accomplishments or anything that you'd like help on or whatnot. Anything that tickles your fancy and I'd like to talk about it or even help make your favoritecharacter costumes come true and such ^_^

Last time I sewed something, I stabbed my finger five times, bled on the fabric, and cobbled something together that shouldn't even be worn by a dog. :|

The same thing happens to me when I try to cook cereal.

I wish to be image for Octoberfest next year. May require help later.

I made my own Vash the Stampede costume years back. I still have it, I'll see if I can dig up some pictures.

I always wanted a Santa "Suit". Something like
    http://www.contemposuits.com/vinci-mens-7-button-vested-red-zoot-suit-7773.html?utm_source=googlepepla&utm_medium=adwords&id=21413227958&utm_content=pla

But modified to be more Santa-y. White borders, and some (very few) jingly bells on some of the points. Like on the tail corners, and collar points. And a lightly more fluffy white collar border.

I'm in the process of piecing together a pirate/buccaneer/thing outfit for ren faires. My biggest problem right now is pants. I've got a pair of pj pants I made that worked pretty well this year (with bluejeans underneath cause it was chilly), but I'd prefer something a bit better (they're thin black material with no pockets, just straight legs with a rope running through the top to tie it). Dunno how motivated I am to make more pants given my lack of sewing equipment and space to keep such a project away from my incredibly destructive cat. Also, shoes, though I just got some leather sandle/shoe/things that are pretty awesome, though a bit flat. Not very classic pirate, but I don't care that much about classic. My big investment this year was a nice belt and various attachments (pouch, flask, tankard strap, pipe strap that works great with my churchwarden) so I can possibly avoid taking my purse in next time. I don't think I have any pictures. Maybe I'll throw it all on and take one just for the hell of it. I still need a yearbook photo...

The only time I sew is when one of my buttons fall off, or some of my clothes tear. Would be cool to see other people projects though.

Sounds like someone needs to set up an Epic2013 topic for this :)

I'm a bit of a mixed-media artist, but sewing is a weak point for me in costuming. Paper, carboard, wood, metal, etc, bring them on. fabric, not so much. It may be cliche, but when one of my costumes needs sewing, I have the missus do it.

I love costumes; sadly I'm not wonderful at making them. I'm decent with hand sewing, or decent enough, but I don't know anything about sewing machines. Been meaning to take me one of them classes at Joann Fabrics, but I've been too lazy/busy.

Ahh sewing. My most recent project were a set of gladiator capes; I think there might be a couple of pictures around here. My crafting projects are usually more mundane though...quilts, curtains, hemming... my sewing machine gets pretty regular use.

Ah yes, lazy/busy. I know lazy/busy well. Lazy/busy keeps me from doing a lot of things...

I would looooove to make costumes. I can't sew worth a damn, but I still like to pretend that one day I'll be making elaborate dresses and petticoats for my strange every day needs. One day.

  • Well, for basics for those who aren't sewing savy or for more complex costumes, look at the very base of an out fit. underneath all of the trim, what is the coat? a super basic black trench/floor length coat that you can find at any thrift store or burlingtion coat factory, after that you cna get cording and edging/modesty tape and either glue/hem tape it on. ^_^ (for Ilriyas)

To make that I could totally help you figure out how to make a super neat fleece outfit with a hat that has the oober eyes. Then it would totally look pretty close.
