Searching for info an inventory management system - advice?

I work at a manufacturing facility that has a very dated inventory system. I'm in the inventory control department, and upper management has invited me to work with them to implement a new system. We need to be able to track raw material inventory, material used, parts made, and parts lost.

I don't know if anyone here knows about this sort of thing, but I trust you guys so I wanted to ask here first. If anyone has ever worked with inventory systems and/or has ANY tips on where to start or systems to look at or recommended advisers to go to, I would be very appreciative. We're in North-central Indiana if that matters any.
