Multiple HDD?

edited August 2003 in Hardware
This may seem like a very dumb question, but....

I have a friend of mine who wants me to build him a system with four harddrives in it (multimedia stuff).

I dont want to have to get a big server board with multiple IDE hookups. Is there an easier way to do this? As far as I can see, I can only hook up two HDD to a standard motherboard (with a two connector cable).

Like I said, the answer is probably right in my face, but I'm not seeing it.

Does the motherboard have raid? You could run a raid array
with four hardrives on most boards with raid.

You could also get another IDE controller card. Just drop it in the PCI slot. You could get a motherboard with SATA and use the two connectors on the board as well as the standard IDE.

    Just my $0.02...

Yeah there are plenty of options. Some mobos come with 4 SATA connectors so you could hook up 4 HDD's to them (can only hook 1 device to each connector in SATA but as Trekky said, you'll also have the standard 2 IDE connectors as well for 4 more devices).

Alternatively if you want purely old IDE, the RAID boards provide 4 IDE connectors so you can hook up to 8 devices to them (which will obviously include CD-Rom drives or burners etc).
