MalwareAlarm and Antispywaresuite Popups!

davidlyhuadavidlyhua Member
edited May 2008 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I have been getting popups telling me that my computer is infected and that I should download MalwareAlarm or Antispywaresuite. Whether I click cancel or close the window by clicking on the x at the top right corner, a window opens up and either does a fake scan of my computer or asks me to download the MalwareAlarm or Antispywaresuite software.

I have tried running AVG and AdAware but I am still getting these popups.
Can someone please help me.

    Hi davidlyhua,

MalwareAlarm and Antispywaresuite are both rogue softwares. These use false, deceptive, misleading, or confusing scan reports or other GUI elements to badger, coerce, or trick users into purchasing the product. Some of them may also install malwares or hijack users' browsers and desktops. Never purchase these products.

    Please do the following...

Download ComboFix from here or here to your desktop.

    * In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
    * It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Warning: You should not use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
    File::
    C:\sqmdata17.sqm
    C:\sqmnoopt17.sqm
    C:\sqmdata19.sqm

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    • Combofix.txt
    • A new HijackThis log.

    How is your computer doing?

    Hi Vekarppe,

I have not yet created the notepad file and copied it combofix as my system now seems to be free of the very annoying pop ups that I was receiving.

Should I still create the notepad file and copy it to combofix?

I copied the notepad file to combofix; a blue dos window opened up for about half a second but then nothing else happened. I then tried double clicking on combofix and the same thing happened. It doesn't scan my computer like it did the first time and it doesn't produce a report for me however hijackthis still works and here is the log:

    Step 1:

Be more careful when using programs like LimeWire. Always check downloaded files with your Antivirus and/or Antispyware before use.

Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

Here are some links for you to take a look at to see some of the ramifications of P2P's:

    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Hi Vekarppe,

Thanks for the advice, I will be more careful in future when using Limewire and other P2P programs.

    Good job. :)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad to your desktop

Now do a system scan with HijackThis, and check the boxes next to all the entries listed below

Your Java is out of date.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
    • Click the "Download" button to the right
    • Select your platform (Windows)
    • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Click the continue button
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version

    I don't see a firewall running.

It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built into Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, it doesn't block anything at all outbound, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. Since most malware accesses the registry and can disable the Windows firewall, it's preferable to install one of these excellent third party solutions:

    Comodo
    Zone Alarm
    Sunbelt Kerio PF

Is Asia Pacific Network Information Centre your ISP?

How is your computer doing? Are the problems gone?

    Hi Vekarppe,

No Asia Pacific Network Information Centre is not my ISP, why do you ask?

The problems with the malware popups have been gone ever since I ran Combo Fix for the first time.

However my web browsing has been a bit slow lately but I think that might just be my internet connection.

Thank you very much for all your help if it wasn't for you I would still be suffering all those very annoying popups.

On another matter, I now have 2 extra folders in my C: called "ComboFix" and "_OTMoveIt".

The "ComboFix" folder contains various files totalling 102 items.
The "_OTMoveIt" folder just contains the log files as well as the mp3 file that contained the virus.

Is it ok to delete these 2 folders?

I also have another question which has nothing to do with spyware but I thought you might be able to help me anyway, if not than that is ok...

Whenever I try playing a DVD using Windows Media Player for some reason I can't here any audio. However if I play an mp3 file the audio works fine.

Also, if I use Real Player or Nero Showtime to play a DVD, the audio works fine.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be?

    Regards,
    David

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4B01E5DA-65B0-43F5-A65B-4A388E179851}: NameServer = 210.15.254.240,210.15.254.241

    Read full information here

If you don't recognize this domain belonging to your ISP or company, and the DNS servers do not belong to your ISP or company, then you should have HijackThis fix this.

Before the fix, do the following:
    • Click Start, then Settings, and select Control Panel.
    • If you're using the Category View, please click Switch to Classic View.
    • Now select Network Connections.
    • Right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and select Properties.
    • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
    • Select Obain DNS servers address automatically.
    • Press OK twice and reboot if asks.
After that, do a system scan with HijackThis and select the entry below:

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4B01E5DA-65B0-43F5-A65B-4A388E179851}: NameServer =
    210.15.254.240,210.15.254.241

Close ALL programs/windows other than HijackThis, and hit Fix checked.

    Important note:

If it happens, that you lose your Internet Connection as a result of fixing this entry, you just need to use HijackThis' backup and restore function to get your connection back. Please read, and print out or save as a text file, the guide here >> www.eradicatespyware.net/HijackThis_Restore.html

    Please do the following....
    • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
    • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
    • Click on the CleanUp! button
    • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
    • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
    • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
    • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
If the folders are still present, just remove them. Empty the Recycle Bin after that.

    Check if these helps you
