WoW on widescreen vs 4:3 monitors?

I'm thinking of picking up a 22" widescreen monitor at 1680 X 1050 to replace my older Syncmaster 204B which plays WoW at 1600 X 1200.

I was researching monitors on google, and found some WoW forum posts arguing that a widescreen monitor resolution actually cuts off more of the picture at the top and bottom than it adds on the left and right sides.

Has anyone here played WoW on widescreen on both types of monitors, and what do you think of the differences?

You lose 25 pixels at the top and bottom. 25 pixels is about this big.

Nothing in WoW happens above you anyhow. The game's action is 99% horizontal. Widescreen wins for WoW and anything else.

Another benefit of that is your new resolution will be 156,000 less pixels each refresh. That's more FPS for you. You also have a nicer looking image to go with that. Win:Win

    My HP DV6000 laptop has a 1280 X 800 15.4" screen, and that's the same 16:10 ratio as the 1680 X 1050 22" monitors.

So when I play WoW on my laptop, what I see there should be identical to what the 1680 X 1050 would give me, except larger, right?

siruispernot - my new pc has a 4870 graphics card, FPS in WoW is no longer a concern! :)

But less pixels sounds like a step in the wrong direction. I'd go with a 1920 X 1200 24" monitor but they cost twice as much as a 22".

156,000 is nothing. It's smaller than a 400x400 image, and it's all from the top and bottom of your screen.

But, yes, it'll be the same but bigger.

Yes that's right, you are talking more pixels with the larger screen so you would notice less jagged edges. If you are currently using AA to help the jaggies then you would probably be able to turn it off on the higher res. Good choice on that 4870, I'm jealous. I've had a nerd boner for that 4870x2 for weeks now.

A real speed junkie will say that every optimization counts ;)

I've played WoW on a 4:3 monitor then, I switched to using a 19" widescreen monitor with the resolution at 1440x900 and I could hardly tell the difference.
