I ordered this today:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=1018761

I already have this:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0531498708.1248409492@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccckadehleikgkicflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=539847&category_oid=-28477

Looking at CPU-ID, i saw that my memory was running at 400mhz, so thought it would be in my best interests to buy some faster memory, especially as i'm getting into overclocking my E8600 .

Thing is, looking at the specs, and recently discovering that my memory is probably running at 800mhz because its ddr2, is this a waste of time and money??? someone please tell me straight!!!

    PC2-6400 = DDR2-800 = 400MHz.

With that said: Your board may need a chipset voltage bump to run 8GB of DRAM, but if you think you need 8GB, who am I to stop you?

If your thoughts were to get faster ram (in MHz) to allow for further increases on the FSB for overclocking, then yes, I would define this purchase as a waste of time and money. It's the same speed as the ram you already have. If you just want to upgrade to 8GB of ram, then all should be fine.

from looking at your ddr2 ram specs, I'm not sure why're ordering another 2x2 ddr2-800 sticks when you already have one in your machine. Its not goto make any OC difference with the DDR2 you''re getting.

if your mobo can take in one at higher rated speed than 800mhz, then get a different one.

That'll do you much better in terms of overclocking potential. DDR2-1066 = 533MHz, which you'll be hard pressed to even reach on most motherboards.

Because i thought that my ram was cheap and slow, as it was from pc world, but i since discovered that it is actually 800mhz

Realize that unless you're substantially overclocking your CPU's front side bus, having faster RAM does nothing for a Core 2 Duo.
