    I was starting to think about cool things I'd like to try and build, and at the time I was staring at these forums for some reason, and then I caught sight of my avatar and started forming an image of what it would look like in Minecraft, so I think I might eventually try to build a majora's mask haha.

    1.2 beta client just dropped. Looks like some new trees (birch?) and some water mobs (octopus spotted so far).

    Seem to be having problems connecting. It'll connect, log in, and then it'll drop the connection, giving me the following error.

    "Internal exception: java.io.UTFDataFormatException: malformed input around byte x."

    And the x is usually between 2, 4, 5, or 6 it seems. Dunno if it's just because the client updated or what it is, I really don't know haha. Just though I'd bring it up.

    From what I read (none of this I can confirm):

    Dying is here, Squids drop black inc, squids are passive

    Skeletons drop bones now (this is a game changer)

    New wood takes about same time to chop, does not stack with other wood, label in game is still "wood"

    Scratch all that... Notch just posted: http://notch.tumblr.com/post/2730532961/minecraft-beta-1-2

    Minecraft Beta 1.2 is live. All servers need to be updated to 1.2.

    New features:
    * Note blocks (right click to tune, trigger to play)
    * 15 wool dyes
    * A new water dwelling mob
    * New tree types
    * Reeds magically turned into sugar canes. They still make paper.
    * A bunch of new crafting recipes
    * One secret useful block
    * One secret pretty block
    * Cake
    * AND MOAR, probably. I forget!

    Bugfixes:
    * Paintings work in multiplayer
    * Disconnecting while riding no longer keeps the player in the world
    * A bunch more state is properly synched in multiplayer
    * Fixed colors going weird on PowerPC
    * Fixed a horrible chunk reload loop in singleplayer
    * Fixed most lighting bugs in newly generated SMP maps
    * Falling sand behaves better in SMP
    * Fixed a few crash on load level bugs

    Good stuff. Already found a black sheep and took his wool (showing magenta, since 'tronic hasn't been updated yet).

    The error is due to the client update for sure.

    I will see about Hey0 and if not, I will just enable it as a regular server.

    The dyes sound cool, as well as the paintings working in multiplayer.
    Underwater mobs could make our underwater city building a bit trickier...

    Underwater mobs are passive, apparently. So, I would imagine they behave like spiders at worst, and cows at best.

    Yes, the server is still down.

    I have to get Hey0 updated (which it probably isn't) or just enable it as a regular server (which I probably have to do).

    I have work to do too :p

    Looks like Bukkit is available. http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/how-to-install-bukkit-newb-friendly.245/

    Not sure I have the time to devote to this.

    Ardi, maybe put it on the "test" box before we do the main switchover?

    There's a new ore, lapis lazuli. Since it's an ore, it will only show up on newly-generated chunks. Going to take some real exploring to get that stuff. It appears at the same levels as redstone, and appears to have the rarity of diamond.

    All that for a blue dye, oi.

    Also, you can apparently smelt cactus into green dye now.

    I'm getting bukkit set up on the new server tonight. Ryder, could you take a backup today please in case anyone logs into the unprotected server and screws it up? I don't think it will happen but you never know.

    Alright, I set up a test environment for bukkit. Unfortunately, it looks like it does not support the latest update :( I guess we will be running vanilla minecraft for a while until bukkit supports the update. If anyone wants to try connecting to the bukkit test server, it's at minecraft.ardichoke.info:25565

    I can't connect to it successfully (I assume because of the update). You're all welcome to try if you like.

    I did a backup before I updated the server :D

    The server is not less protected without Hey0, we don't run any protection mods. The only one proposed I know of is the chest one.

    Yeah, mine started up and is running just fine with the backup that you gave me earlier this week in place. Hopefully the world on your server isn't corrupted or something.
  • RyderRyder Kalamazoo, Mi Icrontian
    edited Jan 2011
    No, it is not the world, it is giving Java errors, etc.

    Did you delete the minecraft_server.jar on that install so that Hey0 would update it?

    That might be why you are running fine. You have to edit the .SH file and start minecraft_server.jar instead of minecraft_mod.jar to run it "vanilla".

    Anyway, upload in progress.

    I wiped the whole test server install out and did a fresh vanilla install then modified my init script to start the vanilla server.

    I think you got a bad download. I have level.dat and didn't get any errors when extracting on my Windows laptop. The unrar tools for Linux, however, absolutely hated that archive both times I downloaded it directly to the server.

    Okay, finally managed to get the world imported after extracting on my windows box and uploading via sftp.

    /me shakes fist at rar

    Anyway, server is up and running now. We're running vanilla at the moment. I'll get bukkit up and running as soon as it's feasible to do so. In the meantime, I'm scheduling an automated backup of the world at 12 noon EST every day in case any griefers get in and ruin our shit. In that case, I will revert to the most current good backup.
