At a fancy burger restaurant; all you need to do is ask for no bun, and don't put any sweet sauce on it :D

Great job Brian! I'm so proud of you lil bro!!!

I'm inspired. Plus I said I wanted to lose 10+ by Christmas, so I'm reading into this now (don't look at my donut pics! Just DON'T! I honestly didn't want to read about rape culture (assignment for class) today and comfort eating took over.

Highest for me was 278. I had the RNY years ago....went down, and back up. As they tell you, weight loss surgery is a tool, and if you don't keep your diet in check, you can and will gain. I went back up to 199...told Cam I wanted to start dieting again a week ago, so here we are now. I'm 194. I want to get to 160 by my bday (september) or at least healthier again.

Anyway, off to read about this. Will be hitting Randazzo's market later. Can you have fruit or any type of sugar substitute? I could be a bit grumpy without coffee (I could possibly live without the diet soda though) but I usually use those cancer packs (sweet n low) or sugar free syrups with coffee. Plus I kinda like green monsters for breakfast...didn't know if the fruit goes bye bye too or not.

Thank you Brian for this thread. I'm so glad you're getting to be a healthier poppa too!

Sugar substitutes are fine for keto, but fruit is verboten, as are many vegetables (like carrots). Think leafy greens and fibrous carbs (like broccoli).

If you're not willing to give up carbs, proper calorie restriction will accomplish much of the same goals as keto. Keto just makes it especially easy to restrict calories.

    Hey Watty :)

Unfortunately, fruit is way off the plate. I've been drinking my coffee black; I've never been a cream-in-the-coffee kind of guy, but since I'm trying to get more fat in my diet I've been adding heavy whipping cream to coffee. Turns out if I am putting cream in my coffee, I prefer it sweet, so I've gotten used to a packet of Stevia when I'm not drinking it black.

Any starchy vegetable is off the plate as well. All I eat any more are greens and more greens. Spinach, swiss chard, collards, turnip greens, kale. Tons of them.

I read someone say "If it's green and it grows above the ground, it's generally safe". Beans, roots, nuts, etc... are all pretty much gone. I am probably being more strict than I need to be, but I've been keeping it <20g of carbs a day. Sometimes that's incredibly difficult, but the scale's not lying. 30lbs down so far.

If you can give up the carbs (bread, sweet drinks, sugar, candy), I can guarantee you will lose those 30 pounds by next september. I think you'll be blown away when you lose those 30 by February ;)

We're here for you! I know a couple others who are doing keto and the results are speaking for themselves.

thank you Thrax. It's sad that my only concern was coffee! HA! Ok, not it's not. mmm...coffee.

I went right to my pics, I will be making jerky (or asking my mom to make me some when I'm home for the holidays) mmmm.....dried meat....

I'm excited! There's a group I can lose weight with! WOOT! Now if you all lived closer so we can walkies together. :)

One thing to be careful of in jerky is the amount of flavorings and sweeteners in them; I've not actually found any keto-friendly jerky yet, at least store bought :(

If you're making your own, though, you get to control what's on it :D

Another thing to be careful of is store-bought bacon: A LOT of it has sweetener sprayed on. I've been doing a lot of shopping at butchers. Meat is fresher, cheaper, and no additives.

greens I can do, meat...I love meat... (heh) beans I don't mind losing...I take calcium, iron, b12, d, multi and biotin pills daily, so I'm not really worried about anything but soda withdrawl (and pms sugar cravings...)

is there a site anywhere with ideas for keto menus? I'm sure my family won't be approving, but I'd like to get an idea of what to make for the week before I hit the store. the Crock pot is my friend for lunches (for me especially) for the week. I just had chicken curry all week that I made for myself. I think I got it out of my system for a bit. :)

that was I think soy sauce, red pepper, and a couple other things. My mom uses sweet n low packets (or some sugar substitute) for jerky and fried rice, because my dad has the diabeetus. (He just had RNY earlier this year too)

Just went to the fridge and freezer and dumped all my presliced homemade breads...(Nutella banana bread, pumpkin...) and am starting a list on what to get for just me for the store. (Plain greek yogurt, extra spinach, more eggs...) I even passed the half dozen fresh donuts and popcorn on the counter to pitch all of that.

I can't justify dumping my pineapple greek yogurt, so that'll be my dessert tonight. I could be a little too geeked about this right now. :)

    Dumb questions now.

    1. I saw you say sour cream is ok. Is plain greek yogurt? I like it better because there's more protein in it (wls is all about protein) and I substitute it for sour cream.

    2. how do you know if you're in keto?

Just read this list. http://www.keto.org/foods.htm YAY, my vodka stays! I can be a smaller drunk soon!

Yogurt is pretty high carb, unfortunately. One serving of a popular brand of plain greek yogurt is 7g of carbs; which is a significant chunk of your daily carb limit. Not worth it, IMO.

I use MyFitnesspal to track food. The critical thing with keto is keeping to this macro:

    65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs

I would definitely switch to sour cream; the hardest thing to get over with keto is that fat is NOT BAD. high fat = good

I bought ketosis strips from CVS to test my urine once in a while; they'll tell you if you're in ketosis.

Just keep in mind that alcohol metabolizes into sugar. I don't know why vodka is on keto.org, but they're wrong. There's nothing keto about alcohol.

normally I'd only be using about 1-2 tbsp of greek yogurt to substitute it for sour cream. Sooo programmed in my head high protein, low fat...hard switch. Eeeek.

What are your 'must haves' around the house right now? Cheese...meat...full fat sour cream I'm assuming.

20 grams of carbs a day, right?

I'm also on the "any alcohol is bad" bandwagon. I don't know why they would say that vodka is okay... it's definitely not. While it doesn't have any carbs, it also turns directly into sugar.

One of the easiest ways to look at keto is: pretend you're diabetic.

well, I haven't had any alcohol in the past couple weeks at least, so that's not a huge deal...but that 100 proof smirnoff looked at me in the freezer when I went to toss the pre-sliced pre-portioned pumpkin bread out of the freezer.

my dad has the diabeetuz, but uses insulin so he can still eat the crap he wants to eat too. Him not too bright (but he's old and stubborn...I can't win with him)

Ok...decided to do a blog to blog/journal or whatever you want to call it...but I don't know what to name it. Ideas? Posted a first blog to go over the day, posting my 'before' pic though I'm sucking in and wearing a cheap slimmer. that fat is still showing. (but I have my bad ass new grey shoes on. :) Just walked the dog a mile while the pic uploaded. It's windy as heck outside! Good thing I'm so fat, or I might've blown away. I hate walking...it hurts my hips and knees. Maybe santa will bring me an elliptical machine for Christmas?

sour cream on list...avocado is on the list (YUM!!!) ground beef for burgers, pork, chicken, sausage, ground turkey, ground chicken...butter, cheese, just got two dozen eggs last night oooh...

What's mexican hot sauce? I can't use sriracha or their chili garlic sauce?

just looked at my enchilada sauce. no sugar and 2g carb per serving. I see what's for lunch tomorrow!

Sriracha is full of sugar, unfortunately. If you get the Sambal Oelek from Huy Fong, though, it's awesome and sugar-free.

The nice thing about Mexican hot sauces is that the majority of them don't have any sweeteners. My favorite is Valentina because I can get a 34oz bottle for $1.79. Next on the list is Tapatio, which is just slightly more expensive than Valentina, but still super cheap.

You can get all kinds of pepper sauces and turn them into other things. I mix Taptio with Marzetti Ultimate bleu cheese dressing (high fat, low carbs!) for an amazing dipping sauce. I melt butter and mix hot sauce into it for chicken. You can mix them with sour cream too.

On the enchilada sauce, I'd avoid it. 2g of carbs is a lot for a tiny amount of sauce; probably using some kind of wheat thickener or something.

So many possibilities, you just need to kinda stretch and change your thinking a bit :D

i started cheating a little bit (eating anywhere between 20-80g of carbs a day for the last few week) and i haven't lost any more weight. I'm going to try to keep it stricter during the week (<20g) and try for around (50g) on saturdays and sundays. i was planning by doing CKD in december assuming i'd drop to 170lbs by then. we'll see. i still plan to start crossfit in january.
