Lessee, nice aluminum alloy case(one reason I got it, cooler running means faster CPU running than my current Dell), build time until after mid December, estimated 12/21/11 due to heavy customizing of a base Thiinkpad W520 being needed to be made in Taiwan and internally shipped to US before thay ship it 3 Day to me. Also anti-lots-of-tilt/anti-drop HD protection(shuts down HD).

HD is only a 500 GB, but can use USB 3.0/2.0 HDs.

Where did I get the money? Well, Mom contributed some for Christmas. It will be January before my CC bill will be due also.

USB 3.0, backwards compatible to USB 2.0, 3-4 ports. The graphics card (Quadro 1000M) has 2 GB Ram, GDDR3 only (courtesy of Nvidia's comparison chart, one of the NEW GPUs).

No Hardwired internal NIC, but it has WiF B/G/N. (Got a D-Link 665-R router, B/G/N plus some LAN ports (mom's computer is wired NIC only).

I did LOTS of laptop shopping(2 Days worth) before I pulled the trigger on this laptop. I live in Florida, known for HURRICANES coming on fairly short notice, it is easier to get a laptop evacuated than a full tower. I have had a Lenovo 3000 C200 8922 for years(put Fedora Linux 16 on it from DVD-- highly recommend DVD install over a CD install, many more drivers on DVD and that means the automatic hardware install finds things more accurately).

John.

Very nice rig. I just received a W520 for work. It's rock solid when it comes to running all my development and business software. No lag in anything. I went with 16GB of RAM.

Also, if you decide to down the road, I'd recommend the docking station. It's nice to be able to plop the laptop in, boot it up with an external button on the station, and everything pops up on my two external monitors.

One last thing, the W520 has two video cards in it. The Nvidia and the Intel. When not performing anything graphically intense, it runs on Intel. TF2 wasn't as smooth as I like, so I went into the BIOS and turned off this graphic feature, opting for Nvidia all the time. I'm plugged in most of the time, so battery life isn't as important.

I haven't had a chance to go in and tweak the graphics on TF2. If you get that up and running before I do, please share what video settings you end up using.

    Happy computing!

Least expensive W-series I've yet seen configured. But seriously, why didn't you go for the FHD screen? I've got one on my W510 and it's the greatest thing ever.

Well, I am near-sighted. The screen is 15.6" maximum size option... So, I got the 1600x900 option (HD+) :)

But seriously, they scared me on the 2nd, they are shipping it NOW (it is en-route between Anchorage, AK and the next stop as of time I am posting). Since I paid $25.00 shipping, it is coming UPS World Express 2 Day-- Monday delivery.

They had a lot of Cyber-Friday-Sale discounts-- I think between the base Cyber Sale discount of about $1,300 off retail and then $331.00 more(coupon) because it was Cyber Friday, well, that took a base price of $2990.00 approximate and dropped it to something reasonable. But, then Tax and Shipping and a 3-year on-site warranty had to be added back in.... :)

Thanks for the info. I will - 99% of the time, barring hurricanes - have the W520 I am getting on one of my computer tables plugged in to a UPS. So, will have the Nvidia Quadro 1000 Mobile running all the time the computer is on. I figure the nice metal case will also cool this laptop. I got the W520 laptop and my aging Dell laptop a D-Link DIR-655 wireless and wired combo router from the Egg (somehow someone went nuts for Cyber Friday and proceeded to drop it to $64.99 from $99.9-- it is a b/g/n router). Configured great, including WPA (no WPA2) key setup.

Unfortunately, do not play games except for system maxing out and configuring games. So, only by hunting around might I find an answer beyond a wild guess that you might have to play with the Intel graphics on and the Quadro off (Quadro line is for professionals, not gamers). Good Luck with TF2. :)
