First of all, @Thrax nice job starting tech demos and hanging with Geoff Keighley.

Secondly, for the first time in a few years, I have some real optimism for the future of enthusiast PC building. The efficiency gained from the new manufacturing process for both AMD CPU and GPU products is going to make it practical to build killer LAN boxes. Everyone is going to just be able to pick up their custom PC, sling it around, throw it on another monitor, take it to a party, take it to another room if it's bugging your wife (my most likely scenario)... See for me, it's not just, hey we are AMD and we are going to go toe to toe with Intel. It's more like, we are AMD and we innovated so you have more flexibility in how you build. I'm incredibly excited about building smaller, with reasonable power draw. Heck, even for non enthusiasts that just want a great experience, what Radeon integrated graphics will be like on a platform with more memory bandwidth. I can't wait to build one of those for someone.

I also have to say, in the last year AMD's marketing has gotten significantly better. The Better Red campaign was very good. The recent slow burn to the ultimate roll out and timing of these Ryzen announcements were very good, the presentation was not a stuffy corporate bore. It was not an embarrassing "this is so gamer" insult either. AMD for the first time in several years look like they have leadership that actually have an idea on how to talk to the market, how to present new product and ideas with some genuine enthusiasm. Add that to the best tech, now AMD could make talking tech fun again.

This makes me excited. It also makes me wish I was in some of the NDA architecture sessions. Even though I don't understand the meat of a lot of it, I like seeing things like efficiency gains through shorter pipelining and better branch prediction, etc. I also see a lot of IBM's IP influence on things, which is good. They're doing so much great stuff in the RISC space, I'm happy to see some of it breaking into the x86 space.

I would have liked to see bigger L3 caches to push Intel harder, but I get it, that stuff is expensive real-estate on a processor die.

  • I haven't updated the CPU/Mobo in my gaming rig since early 2010... This might be just the thing to finally refresh it and also finally implement my hybrid Linux/Windows workstation concept (lightweight Linux install base, virtual Windows w/ PCI passthrough gaming card, virtual Linux workstation for being a productive member of society). Mmm... needlessly complicated but awesome setups.

Remember that these are consumer processors, where L3 cache beyond 20MB doesn't mean very much at all. There will be other Zen-based parts for workstations and servers (codenamed "Naples").

It's going to be time to replace my creaky FX-8350/AM3+ platform.

    Cliff_Forsterardichokemertesn
  • The funny thing is my AM3+ isn't like a bad performer or anything, it's just disappointing how it's full promise never really came into fruition and how long it has taken to get here. Two years ago there were even people inside of AMD that were saying they were no longer going to push for the enthusiast CPU market. I had given up hope, I figured they had abandoned us. I built Intel systems for people, suggested Intel spec hardware for certain applications, it made me feel so dirty inside. The enthusiast is what influences the mainstream, you have to play in that space to be successful and finally it looks like we have AMD back.

Woah, the automatic overclocking given appropriate cooling is a really rad idea.

I've been looking forward to a build shrink for a long time. I won't be there day one, I'll kinda wait a few weeks, see where the real benchmarks end up. I'll probably be fine with the $329 model, save a little heat and noise. I'm thinking about building in the Fractal Define Mini. My Current Corsair 600t is massive on my desk, and I never plan to do another multi GPU build, plus I'm over windows and lights. I'll have a PC that looks all grown up and stuff.

I'm mad I forgot to buy AMD stock when it was like $3. AyyMD.

If only Ryzen didn't have a PSP, I would be soooo happy.

Let's face it though, AMD did it to make me happy!

  • I look forward to rebuilding my aging gaming desktop again. It's been too long. That 1700 chip should do nicely, and the low TDP is sexy as fuck. I have the strangest boner right now.

Real Talk or Lulz???? I'll go with "Real Talk" Ryzen is better than Viagra, trust me, I'm in my 40's.

Man if the early benchmarks are correct, and a $500 Ryzen outperforms a $1050 Core i7-6900K.....

By this do you mean platform security processor, or am I missing something?

Yup, that's the one. If it came with a Playstation Portable, I would be confused, but I'd take it.

I get that the PSP allows some nice features, but I'd be happier without a black box that no one can prove isn't full of back doors. Some of the features it enables (like encrypted memory) are genuinely useful for cloud computing, but at home, that's more likely to prevent me from reverse-engineering programs or defeating DRM than it is to stop an external threat. I'm not here to rain on AMD's parade - I'm thrilled to see Ryzen putting Intel on notice - but I do wish there was an affordable, modern CPU without without ME/PSP/TrustZone.

    Ohi.

I hear you on the PSP, but it's never going away. DRM schemes that power Netflix, Amazon, and other protected content that's mega popular relies on it. Literally not possible to ship w/o TrustZone and sell well.

TL; DR the NSA has access to your CPU.

  • It looks like the primo chipset is reserved for full ATX just like the last platform? In fact, I can only find two mini boards? Am I missing something?

    I'm thinking about getting a 1600X or 1500. The 1600X is a 95W part, and the 1500 is 65W.
If I don't OC the 1600X, would it actually use much more power than the 1500? Would it likely get close to the 95W rating?

My main interest is switching to a compact and quiet mATX system, so I'd want to keep cooler size and noise down.

Leaked benchmarks have the single threaded performance of the 1600X to be 31% better than my 2500K, and 143% better multithreaded performance. Finally, a significant upgrade from Sandy Bridge for less than the retail price of Sandy Bridge when it was new!

TDP ratings are strictly thermal ratings. Power doesn't factor into the actual equation. The 65W TDP units can consume about peak 87W electrical, the 95W TDP units about 125W peak electrical. But lower TDP ratings do permit a smaller and quieter heatsink/fan speed.

    I'd still get the 1600X.

Looking at this Motherboard here, the price makes me think "What's the catch?"

Anything stand out as a "Don't buy this!" here?

    The gaudy printing? ;)

It's got the cheaper chipset, but I don't recall the differences other than the audio codec. It does have VRM heatsinks, which will help with OCing.
