Icrontic St Paddy's Beer Tasting - Barrel Aged Scottish Ales (Begorrah!)

edited March 2019 in Events

In the hope of being a more organized person in 2019 (Hahahahahah) I'm kicking things off with beer tasting planning for the year. First major Icrontic event is ICSP, so it seems like a good time for a tasting. Since folks typically get pretty messy during Nain on Sunday, this will likely be at 3pm on Saturday the 23rd.

We'll be tasting through a variety of Scottish-style ales that have gotten the barrel-aging treatment. Some of these will be Scottish Ales, some of them Wee Heavies, some of them Scotch Ales, so we'll get a good variety of flavor profiles. We'll taste our way through 10-11 of these beers along with an assortment of food (may or may not be Irish and/or Scottish themed, we'll see!)

Tasting will come in around $30-35 and will be best suited to at least 5 attendees besides myself or 10-11.

Please post if you're interested in joining and hopefully we'll see you in a few months!

Moderately-qualified "IN". Cleared it with The Boss™ this afternoon.

I have a Backwoods Bastard bomber that I wouldn't otherwise kill on my own if we need a little extra.

Unqualifying my IN on this. Just need an idea of time so I can plan.

Will probably just crash somewhere at HQ.

OP has been updated with additional details. I have firmed up the time to be 3pm on Saturday the 23rd.

I've got some REALLY fun beers lined up for this. I'm excited. As if I am never not.

Pricing works out best if we have either 6 or 11-12 attendees and we're at 8 right now, so we still have 3-4 open seats now that Josh is out.

@cola why aren't you in on this?

  • AlexDeGruvenAlexDeGruven Wut? Meechigan Icrontian

Thank you to everyone for coming out! This was a blast as always.

Only 5 people scored every single beer on their sheet, but I consider that a bare minimum sample size to at least put out a ranking on the beers.

High and low score have been eliminated so each is a ranking of the 3 middle scores. It turns out this preserves the ranking of all 5 scores averaged for the top 5 beers. The bottom 5 rearrange drastically comparing the mean to the trimmed mean. Without further adieu!

    4.6 - Bruery Chronology 12: Scotch Ale (2017)
    4.4 - Thirsty Dog Wulver (2015)
4.3 - Cigar City Barrel Aged Big Sound (2016)
    3.8 - Goose Island Cooper Project (2018)
    3.7 - Revolution Gravedigger Billy (2018)
    3.7 - Central Waters Brewer's Reserve Scotch Ale (2017)
3.6 - Voodoo Tenacious Wee (Woodford Reserve) (2017)
3.4 - Dark Horse Barrel Aged Scotty Karate (2018)
    3.3 - Founders Backwoods Bastard (2017)
    2.9 - Blackrocks Barbaric Yawp (2019)

Some pretty interesting results! The Chronology 12 from the Bruery took a solid victory, and people who liked the beer described it as "nilla, caramel, oak," "complex, rich, not hot just a yummy boozy flavor," and "legs." Thirsty Dog's Wulver came in second, described by tasters as "Nice sweetness, caramel, fruit," "easy drinking with solid body," and "Something something attenuation." Third place went to Cigar City's Barrel Aged Big Sound, which was described "nice sweetness, good barrel character," "woody background, malt forward," "would drink more."

Food pairings from Ackroyd's Scottish Bakery in Redford were a wonderful accompaniment. We enjoyed their house-made Shortbread, Walnut Tart, and Sausage Roll, along with some red currant jam and haggis seasoned chips.

Until the next one, cheers folks! If you got pics, post 'em up!
