Managed switches have operating systems and user interfaces. They are basically computers. You can program them, you can set them up for trunking or link aggregation, you can do vLANs, you can configure spanning tree, set up switch matrices, check port status, send manual WOL commands, etc.
Unmanaged, you can plug stuff in and have them see each other. That's about it :D

You can limit the bandwidth to certain ports or make packets become 'lost.' Good pranks.;):D

Why then do managed switches cost about half the amount unmanaged ones do?
e.g. http://www.newegg.com
D-Link 8-Port Gigabit Switch, Model DGS-1008D - Retail $138
D-Link 8-Port 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged Gigabit Switch, Model DGS-1008TL - Retail $310

Unmanaged = 10/100/1000Mbps = gigabit = teh same!

$138 switch - Buffer memory: 256K
Ports: 8 x 10/100/1000Mbps Ports
$310 switch - Buffer memory: 256KB per device
Ports: 8 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation RJ-45 Ports
This one is bigger
And where does it say the first one is managed anyway??
