I really only like some of the "Classic" anime series. Yes, the ones that everyone in America knows?
Ninja Scroll, Appleseed, Akira, Neon Genesis, Ghost in the Shell.
Timeless pieces of work, in my opinion.

I have Ghost in the shell + Akira. These were the first/only titles I've ever seen. To be honest, the only reason I bought them was to get inspiration for some decal-sketches I was preparing for my friends truck. I ended up loving them.

what? they had an anime club at the university... By the way, I thought the cg in Initial D made it stand out from other animes, however the american version is terrible. dont get it unless you are getting the japanese version with subtitles. (terrible voices and rap do not go with racing cars on the mountains)

i really didn't like that movie, i thought the game handled that storyline better than the movie did.

Uh... You must not buy that much anime... All anime on DVD contain the english dub and the original Japanese audio with literal english subs.
Oh, and Initial D was originally produced in 1994. CG back then could not match hand animation like it could today (for a regular on air series). On the contrast, Macross Plus was also made in 1994 and it was an OVA so they had a much bigger budget to use a better computer for better CG, so it looks much better than Initial D's CG.

Was the DVD released by Synchpoint? (the one who licensed FLCL). Also, was FLCL only 2 episodes per DVD as per the Synchpoint release? Otherwise if it wasn't that way, that store was selling you a bootleg HK DVD rip.
Also, some really old anime such as Urusei Yatsura, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (the original mecha anime - originally aired in 1982) is released with only the original Japanese audio and english subs (Such as what www.animeigo.com does)

hey what is GTO? i've seen it around (ut has a dedicated IRC anime channel so we dont use outside bandwidth... w00t) and i've heard good things
danball1976
22 Feb 2004, 03:32am
GTO = Great Teacher Onizuka. Both an anime of about 65 episodes and a live action adaptation of the anime for 14 1 hour episodes.
Also attached are two files:
One being my anime activity, the other is what you generally miss when getting a anime DVD, which is translator notes.
Well, if UT has a dedicated anime channel, then how do you download anything other than whats there. There obviously isn't much of anything there then.
I just watched a Anime Music Video that was originally made in 1989, and then remastered by the person who made it. This AMV was based on Akira, with the song The Kids are Back by Twisted Sister. For a animation that was produced in 1989, Akira has some amazing animation.

I treat fansubbing sort of like previewing the series to see if its worth buying. I don't like buying a video of any kind without seeing it first in either the movie theater, or on TV, or by digisubbing.

Everything I had was on my old hard disk, which cacked and died a couple of months ago. Weeks and weeks worth of kazaa downloading, gone.

22 Feb 2004, 04:56am
Well, 1 and a half months ago, I bought a second 120GB hard drive to setup RAID 0. I didn't have any DVD's to save all of it, and only 50GB available on drive C:, so I saved what I could, but after I setup RAID 0, I had to redownload 90GB anime that I couldn't save. This took just two weeks to do. That is the main reason why I keep track of what I download in that word file.

I've never seen one. I do like Daffy Duck though, does that count?
TheBaron
22 Feb 2004, 09:11am
well let me explain - the way the ut network works is that you pay for a specified amount of (admittedly obscenely fast) bandwidth, say 8 gigs a week. with a lot of filesharing, that 8 gigs can be eaten up surprisingly fast. however, any transfers through the network dont qualify towards that bandwidth quota, so we have an anime channel reserved for transfers among ut network users. theres quite a large amount of stuff there actually, and more gets added pretty frequently.

I've never seen one. I do like Daffy Duck though, does that count?
No bothered. If you haven't seen any Japanese animation, then you shouldn't have replied.
The Baron, thats pretty neat. As new students come in and bring their computers and what other anime they might have (such as DVD's, or even VHS tapes), I could see how new stuff could be added pretty quickly.
Just watched the first DVD to HELLSING... wow, gonna have to go get the rest now :D
Was the DVD released by Synchpoint? (the one who licensed FLCL). Also, was FLCL only 2 episodes per DVD as per the Synchpoint release? Otherwise if it wasn't that way, that store was selling you a bootleg HK DVD rip.

Your probably right, I have the box in front of me, and it looks pretty legit, but maybe only as a Japanese standard. It is ALL in japanese, so I can't read 95% of the box. The only numbers on the box is the barcode, but no trademarks or anything.... wierd. But funny that a store sold this to us... although I think this was an imported DVD since the store has some pretty damned RARE items for sale, not to mention all the kick ass statues and minuratures.
danball1976
22 Feb 2004, 05:43pm
Yeah, It definitely is one of those region free discs with probably poorly translated english subtitles. HK (Hong Kong) DVD rips are usually done using Japanese R2 discs and then sold here in the US. They seem to like pushing the limits on how many episodes can fit on one DVD, which of course lowers quality.

I'm becoming a bigger fan of J-pop myself. I know some of it sounds corny, but it's some good melody I can hum too. Perhaps not knowing the words and artists allows me to elisten without being biased against the artist or lyrics, and just enjoy the music itself.
