I meant to post this earlier, but I've been too busy. Anyhow, a lot of you know that I help out the local Habitat For Humanity office with their computers and their network. You also may know that my grandparents' business bought them 4 new workstations, a server, and some software about this time last year. A few weeks ago, the HVAC system in the building (at least for their office) was replaced. The HVAC system is in the same room as the server and their storage, so all of that stuff had to be packed up and put in a storage closet in the building or something.

Well, at some point, while their stuff was in this closet, some of it got stolen. Specifically, the copy of Windows XP and Office XP that we bought them last year. Thankfully, the a$$hole(s) responsible for this were too stupid to take the copy of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate edition they have, but they did take Office and Windows. They didn't get the 10 licenses for each one though, just the single CD keys on the boxes themselves. Unfortunately, none of the other license keys work with my copies of Office XP/Windows XP, so they're going to have to buy new software, if the place we bought it from can't help us out.

Whoever stole the software knew they were stealing it from a nonprofit, too. Some people...

I regularly have to take reports of burglaries of churches. Total nonsense.

If police and insurance reports ect proove they were stolen couldn't you get new keys? Wouldn't MS accept they had been stolen and give you new ones?

Called MS. They said to contact the place that sold them the software. They didn't report it to the police, or bother with teh insurance, and the chances of them doing so are somewhere between zero and none. They should just take their landlord to small claims court, but they won't do that because they get their office rent free and stuff, so...

So if the retailer has records and can give proof of ownership does that help?
