How to set you PC to Fold

csimon answered a comment I made in another Thread - suggested I start a new one to ask - and this will show you how much I know.....

SAY WHAT!!! I think I am hyperthreading, I don't know how to answer how many gig/meg I am running ..... I was talking about Tinkers and I did mention 10 minutes a frame. ( each )

muddocktor had posted the information on setting up the console FAH4 by answering the questions username, team # then NO NO NO YES FAH IDLE 100 NO 15 and YES, and of course the machine ID. Months ago in another forum I was told the easy way to set this up and I think I was told wrong, or better to say partially right. name # NO NO NO NO and that is how I'm set now. I'm not sure where to look in our Forum to find this information in here without starting off topic in another Thread - and this may not be the best way for new members OR ME to find the answer. witenoiz, I read your post in that other thread. I have a P4PE (2.4b @ 533Mhz non HT) at work. 10 mins per frame sounds about right for a sTinker. I really don't think HT makes all that much difference. Both my 2.4Cs at home are overclocked to 3.0-3.17Ghz and the difference in frame time is only about 23%. This difference I attribute to processor speed, not HT (I could be wrong tho).

Neither of my HTs run more than one instance of F@H. I read a couple of articles here at http://forum.folding-community.org/ and the long of the short of it is, the gain you get from running 2 instances is minimal at best. To get real results from running 2 instances, run them on a dual Xeon.

hmm, has anyone tried running 2 instances on an Athlon dualie?

If you are running two consoles, and they are both running tinkers, what is the frame time?
If you turn one off does the frame time change for the other?

It is a lot more fun to run gromacs on P4, the SSE really flys.

I could be mistaken, but I'm do believe that running two F@H instances will improve your overall productivity. The performance of the first WU might slow down, but the rate at which the second is processed more than makes up for it. Try running two instances on each of your HT rigs for 3 or 4 days and see if your points per day starts to climb.

If you set them to run as a service, use -cpu=1 for the first F@H client and -cpu=2 for the second when setting up the service with service.exe. You can find the instructions on http://www.bluetentacle.co.uk and also http://www.2cpu.com will probably have some helpful topics on folding with HT processors and how to setup the clients properly.
