Ide cable hookup

Is it possible to have the hardrive as a master and a cd drive as a slave on the same primary ide cable or is it just inefficient?

It's POSSIBLE, but it's preferable to have the CD as the secondary master and the hard drive as the primary master. If you have more than 2 drives, ideally, you'll use a separate PCI ata controller, but it's not necessary.
