View Full Version : Cant fold
I have about 80 wu's finished in the time that i have been folding (I know my computer isnt the best) but i cant get anymore wu's since i installed "the no nonsense console." It always gets to like 398 out of 400 and then cant add them or something. Also whenever i turn off my computer it always restarts. I'm thinking of just deleting and reinstalling the newer version. Please speak up if you know the problem of why I cannot fold.

Post the log file of the problem area. That will help us better.

Go to the folder where you installed Folding@Home. A hypothetical example is C:\Folding@Home. Within that folder will be a file called FAHlog.txt. Click (or double click, depending on your settings) on the file; copy, then paste to a post in the thread. Don't feel stupid. We all are at different ability levels. It would be pretty boring if we were all at the same level, wouldn't it! :)
okay i have it

Leave Folding@Home not running.
Possible bad WU or Core or Client download. Why, do not know. I would go into the work folder inside the Folding@Home folder and try this:
See if you have a file with the extension .arf .... Change the extension to .arc .... Folding uses the .arc extension, and usually does NOT use .arf . Sicne the checksum matched, it is possible the silly thing was complaining about the extension on the CP file or the original archive
Restart client (the Folding@Home program).
See if you get more such junk, if so I think you need to get a new core and client from scratch IF deleting the contents of the work directory inside the Folding@Home directory does not help. If it continues to work for awhile and then happens again, I think I would get a system file checker running to check the HD. What Windows are you running????

Kind looks as if the Core or client might be bad. Also you HDD might have some bad sectors. Might want to scandisk or something to check the HDD.

Alf - I have a few boxes that would be flying at that rate!  My advice is to get rid of what you have ( I had a similar problem ) create a folder on your desktop ( I call most of mine Fold ) download the no-nonsense Fah4Console into that folder - then click or dbl click the red :fold: and answer all the questions! I will suggest the answers from another thread and I have all of mine set this way Alf 93 ( well I used my name ) No No No Yes Fah Idle 100 No 15 Yes and machine ID 1. It is a shame to lose lost work but sometimes your the statue - sometimes you get to be the pigeon. I am confused about when you restart your computer folding restarts too - you had to set it that way - and I am guessing you are on dial-up. Before you turn off your computer make sure you shut down Folding correctly to be safe - I use Control + C Good Luck and let us know what works or doesn't - You will be folding if you want to. We will help!! Jack

Also whenever i turn off my computer it always restarts.
I just read this again - and again - your computer restarts? The obvious I guess would be run SpyBot, ScanDisk, Defrag, run your virus program - and before it starts ( sounds like it is re-booting? ) kill the power supply or unplug it and let it sit for 5 minutes. Jack

I have no .arc or .arf extension in the work folder. I am running windows xp professional. I have no spybots and am running a virus scan now. The F@H no nonsense console is not in the F@H folder but it is in the startup folder.
I have the same problem with gromacs too. I will probably just end up uninstalling it and install teh newer version. Also i have a cable modem my computer just has its problems.
I mean when i log off or turn off my computer all my wu progress is lost so i have to start all over

It looks to me like your downloaded work units are corrupted. Your log does not show the indicators of an unstable system.
so i just uninstall and then reinstall?

That's what I would do - delete - New install. Then if you have more problems - one step at a time. Jack

Create a seperate folder, DL the v4 no-nonsense console. Make sure that you run with -local and -verbosity 9 flags (of course in addition to the -advmethods and -forcesse).
What part of Indy Alf? I used to live out on the south side.
i already have the no nonsense console, im just going to delete and reinstall and add the flags to the new version, hamilton county (but not in carmel)

OK, here's your opportunity to educate me. What do the -local and -verbosity flags accomplish?
Verbosity increases the amount of information recorded to the log file. I'm not sure as to the purpose of the -local flag.
Geeky1
6 Mar 2004, 10:57pm
-local makes sure the client uses the information in the client.cfg file instead of reading from the registry.

I think in one thread it was established that with the no-nonsense console version you have no place to enter flags.. I am using both Fah3Console and Fah4Console on the computers in my office and basement :fold: - none with any ((-local -verbosity 9 or the -advmethods and -forcesse )) flags. Only a few are in my start-up folders. Since you are on cable I would guess you leave your computer running all the time so just keep it simple  delete everything you have downloaded from Stanford, and start over. Answer the questions with your name Alf team 93 and no no no and I'll bet it will work fine. You WILL process a Tinker the first time. :woowoo: I have a friend that works for the city of Indianapolis - his name is Bill - would you say Hi for me? Thanks - Jack

I have to use local since my machines are on dial up and I have multiple instances runnig. If I don't they sometimes forget which config to use and try to use each others. A real mess.
For the console you either use the start up or a short cut and put the flags there.
well it didnt work, sorry guys ill be taking a break until i get a new computer (this may)

What didn't work and don't blame the comp. My p2 works just fine. Here's what to do.
Go to this site (http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/download.html) and download a program called em3. It will help you monitor your progress. There's a guide there on how to install it.
Go here (http://www.overclockers.com.au/folding/service-nt2000xpnew.htm) for a guide to install fah as a service using a program called firedeamon. If you install it as a service then fah will still run even if you log out. The guide is a bit old but that doesn't matter i've had no problems following it.
In the guide there is a line that says that you should add the service tag as a parameter. In the section you should also add the flags mentioned in this thread.
That's all. Try it and get back to as. Setting up fah does take some time but when it's done you can forget about it.

Hang in there, alf - we respect your tenacity. :respect:
There are lots of fringe benefits that come with Folding. It helps motivate us to keep our computers in top shape and examine what is going on with them in ways we may not otherwise think of.
You've been through the mill, but you are learning things about how your computer works that can only help you down the road.

Good to here that it at least folding something. Let's hope you get it fixed. There's nothing worse then having a broken rig and not being able to figure out what's wrong.
