Intel takes X86-64 for the Yamhill that doesn't exist, so AMD decided to use SSE3 in an upcoming core revision of their 64 bit line. The catch? It'll be faster than Intel's SSE3 implementation. It is unknown at this time if the Opteron will receive a similar upgrade.

...Both processor lines will feature full compatibility with SSE3. In fact, it may actually be somewhat better than Intel's SSE3, as the AMD chip will dynamically translate some of the SSE instructions into operations specifically tailored to the "Hammer" design, in some cases lowering latency down to as little as one cycle. Intel's latest "Prescott" iteration of the Pentium 4 design requires many more cycles to complete the same work due to its higher clock speed and deeper pipelines.

Look out media performance! Here comes AMD!

eeehhhh, could you change the code tag to a quote tag so i don't have scroll all the way to the right to read that?

Yeah that would be nice.

There was no patent on SSE3? I thought thats why AMD didnt use SSE2 on the XPs because of the patent and had to wait for the 4-bit CPUs to add it. So they will add SSE2 and SSE3 to the new CPUs then?

Ahh, thats better on the eyes

mmonin, I remember reading somewhere that amd and intel had some kind of cross patent agreement where they could use each other's technologies, which is why amd was pissed when intel decided to use x86-64 without giving credit to amd anywhere.

So they traded the 64-bit instructions for SSE3 or all instructions?

no no, i don't think they trade anything. i think they just let each other use their technologies.

Well trade technologies/info/whatever. I knew you you meant. But I was asking for just the SSE3 or for more instruction sets in the future. One time deal or something?

no i think it's a standing agreement they've had for a long time, i don't think it expires anytime soon either.

Bah! I was in a rush to get it up. I'll fix :)

Fixed on the main page. Elseways:

Anyways. AMD and Intel have a cross-patent agreement. Intel can use anything AMD makes, and vice versa.
