View Full Version : Bad Writes On A Proven Fast RAID

Specs:
2x Hitachi 160GB 8MB cache SATA (native) HDDs
Si 3112A Chip (ABIT NF7-S onboard) with BIOS 4247
XP Logoed 1.0.0.40 drivers in RAID 0
These drives flew on my last WinXP install (I have pics if you want to see). I had a bad incident and a totally hindered Windows install so I formatted & reinstalled--ended up with the scores you see below. I kill every process I can and I still get the same thing. I've played with it all day, and nothing changes. I'm clueless
TIA
-PaRK
EDIT:// I've reinstalled the drivers and reflashed BIOS. No change what-so-ever in scores.

Maybe you could try reinstalling windows again? Yeah that's fun :aol: Just make sure to do a Ghost image after everything's good.

That's wierd. I have no idea what could cause that.

You could have a drive getting ready to say "Goodbye" or you might be having issues with the driver or controller.
When my 120 WD SATA started dying the writes got real slow on my array so that's where I'm getting my ideas from.
One way to test it is to ghost your image to a cd then run the drives individually and ghost back to each one with it hooked up alone and run tests on each in turn and see if one has writes that are tanking.

Getting ready to run Hitachi's "Drive Fitness" program. I'll report back.
I'll have to get a new Ghost that writes to NTFS & supports RAID drivers before I can test each drive itself.. :-/

Well right off the bat 1 of my HDDs will freeze the Hitachi Drive Fitness test. During "Analizing RDM" the whole system freezes. It's only on this one drive, so I'm thinkin it's on its way out the window. :bawling: I've tried a new SATA cable, checked all connections, changed SATA header on the motherboard.. all the same thing.
I've never RMAed anything, but I saw this @ Newegg (RE: Extending Standard Warranty):
All other OEM products warranted by NewEgg.com will have the Standard 1-year warranty extended 1 additional year.
I didn't choose to extend my warrenty, so does that mean I have 1 full year on these HDDs? The invoice date is 1/20/2004, so they're really new. I just got to know to send them to NewEgg or Hitachi.
Please let me know how long NewEgg covers on HDDs and I'll ship this one back ASAP.
/me PaRK goes and buys CD-Rs to backup ~150GB :grumble: (Backup IDE is only 80GB)

I'm guessing you have 1 year warranty and you can send them to newegg.

I would CALL Newegg, phone number is 1 (800) 390-1119. Have invoice or order number handy. Tell them your problem, the HD fails to validate with mfr util. Bet they set up an RMA real fast.... If you REALLY want a 24-48 hour delay, email them at service@newegg.com with your telephone number-- me, I just call them and set the RMA up if needed. Have even gotten them to place a web order when I could not (site revision versus browser thing)-- VIA phone....
You should be within a standard 90 day minimum OEM RMA time frame, right now and for a while, but call and ask, on Monday, please. They are on West Coast, if you are on East Coast, try between 11 AM and 7 PM your time.
