DVD backup problem.....help

Im posting this for a friend of mine (as I dont own a DVD writer so it cant be for me ;))

Hi Guys, I wonder if anyone can help me out. I am getting errors when trying to copy some DVD backups. (the original dvd has already been ripped, decompressed and burnt to a blank).

No matter what software I use (and I've tried most of them) I end up with 'unreadable' and 'out of range' errors. It also happens over a variety of brands of blank media too.

I'm beginning to suspect it's a hardware issue? (I'm using a 4x liteon writer)

Has anybody got any ideas? Any help would be appreciated...

Is the source disc scratched? I would suggest dvd x rescue but I am unsure if it will read backups.

I have better luck making backups of backups with Roxio 6 than Nero 6. Have you tried that?

If all else fails and the original he purchased is too damaged to read too, he may have to rent it again and make a backup of the rented disc. (I am only guessing that would qualify as "fair use".
