View Full Version : On Hiatus
As I eluded to in Thrax's post I'm going on hiatus soon and I have no idea of when I'll be back.
No this isn't going to be for a couple of weeks or a month but will most likely be for the better part of a year if not longer as I won't have internet access and since I don't have cash to speak of I won't even be able to get into town to use the library's comps so I'll be cut off from the electronic world for god knows how long.
I'd like to thank everyone for being such good people and I'd like to say that I've enjoyed being part of such a caring community.
Good luck to everyone on the projects they have going and I hope that when I'm able to begin production again that I'll find the team still firmly in it's present position.
This site has made up a major portion of every day for the past several months and it's going to suck not being able to come here whenever I'd like but those are the breaks. I'm moving in with my sister so I can stay in AR and be close to my mom while she's still around, the trade off is that I'll be in a bad situation because my sister really doesn't want me living with her but my dad's kinda forcing her to let me stay there as the house is in his and mom's names and he wants me to stay here so my life is going to suck for the time being.
Anyways, I wanted to take this chance to say fairwell to all my friends here while i'll still have a chance to see what your thoughts are on the matter because tomorrow I'm tearing my rig down and packing it in.
Have a good one guys, no, this is no joke either.
:( Sorry to see you go, madmat. We'll be here when you come back, though.
Don't forget about us, man!
I'm not thrilled about having to go either but what's got to be has got to be...I'll be back in my own time and I won't forget about you guys...my folding will still be dedicated to Team 93 when I can get back to it and I'll make sure that Short-Media will never be removed from my favorites (I'm even backing my favorites up to cd just in case I bork my O.S. install) so that when I do make it back online you'll just be a few short clicks away.

I know it's kind of a cliche, but out of everything bad, something good sprouts. I've enjoyed your contributions and will miss your scared kitten and will have nothing but good thoughts for you and your family. Remember, good comes from the oddest places---if you let it.
Take good care.

Matt: I'm sure your current situation is made more difficult by the health of your mother. Perhaps you're even a bit numb to some of the things you're currently struggling with. Don't let life's trials and tribulations drag you down. There's always a way to dig yourself out of a hole. Never does one's light of opportunity shine more brightly than when faced with such adversities. Just remember while the good people here at S-M may not know you on a more personal or intimate basis it does not mean we don't care about you and your well-being.
God bless.

He's been talking about it for a week or two, gini. I doubt it's an April Fools . . . unless he started a few days early. :)

All the best, Matt. For you and for your family.
Might it be worth sitting down somewhere quiet with your sister and discussing a "fresh start"? No need to reply, just a thought starter.

I have no doubt you'll come out of this fine. I hope it's sooner rather than later and that the road is not too tough.
I'll miss you - hurry back!

Thanks guys, I plan on trying to smooth things over with my sister but as hard headed as she is it may well take 6 months for her to calm down. I'll try to get things straightened out ASAP but I'm being necessarily pessimistic here as my rule of thumb has always been "expect the worst that way when it doesn't happen you aren't disappointed but if it does you're ready." Although it's a crappy way to look at things, I'm never disapointed and I'm ready when things fall apart.
I'm personally wishing for the best for all of you and you'll all be in my thoughts, take good care of the site, I don't want to see any guinea pigs when I can get back here.

Good luck Matt. Keep in mind that tomorrow is another day ...also you have just as much right to be in that house as she does whether she likes it or not. Maybe figure what her concerns are and try and help out that way. It might be money (support) issues or privacy or whatever.
I'm sure you will figure something out ...you're a smart fellow ...after all you do hang here!

I'll miss ya, madmat!
Well, 24hrs and counting 'til I pull the plug on the cable modem. It's going to be one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life (you have no idea how much broadband has improved life for me) but it's what I've gotta do.
I just want you all to know that this has been one of the funnest online communities I've ever participated in even if a lot of you are as hard headed as mules about certain things (Intel and nVidia spring to mind ;D) but you wouldn't be who you are if you didn't hold true to what you love would you?
You're a pretty tight knit group of people and most of you have made me feel welcome in the group and and the rest have tolerated me which shows exactly how cool all of you are...yeah, I'm sure there are some that just say "aww geez" to the stuff I come up with but no-one is outright hostile.
Anyways, I'm rambling but I guess in my way I'm just dancing around the point which is; I'm going to miss the lot of you. :sad2:

Matt: Please find some way to keep us updated on the condition of your mother . . . even if it's via posts from a friend with Internet access. I could give you my cell # and I can keep everyone updated for you. We all are concerned for you and her.

Thanks for the update on your mum, Matt.
She is in our prayers, wishing for the best.
Well, the news as of now is she's still in the hospital and as far as I know she's in I.C.U. still.
I'd like to say I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow but, the computer is going to be moved on my first trip tomorrow in which I take my car to my folk's house and pickup my dad's truck and trailer...I figure that the computer will be better served to be transported in a nice plush car rather than bouncing around in the bed of a truck.
Have a wonderful day everyone, thanks for the kind words and I'll BBL.

Sorry to get in on this late, but best of luck to you. I'm sorry to hear that the situation you're going into isn't ideal. But good luck with the time you'll be there.

Matt
You will be sorely missed! While you mentioned one cliche I beleive in another, "You can do anything you want if you want it bad enough". It is so true that you can accomplish anything you set out to with enough determination. And yes, you are one of us now!!! ;) I am at a real loss for words here.
Check your PM's
The time has come to yank the rig apart...I'd just like to say that I guess I'm making a big deal out of this because to me it is a big deal...this site has become a cornerstone in my life and it's being taken away by forces I have no control over.
I know it's not permanent but life has a way of tossing a ball into left field when we least expect it, I hate to sound negative but one never knows what is going to happen, I think the story of Bart Williams illustrated that for me so I just want to say my farewells to everyone as if it is a permanent thing just in case something unexpected does happen but I fully plan to be back ASAP.
Yeah, I read Thrax's post and about peeps making a big deal out of leaving and I suppose I'm doing that but like I said, it is a big deal to me and I'm gonna miss this place.
Anyways, I'm wasting time...later guys.

Dude, what you are doing is significantly different than what he is talking about. What he is talking about is something that also annoys me greatly- the "Nyah! This sucks! I hate this place and I QUIT!" thread.. It goes something like this:
dude: THIS PLACE SUCKS - I QUIT
someguy: see ya
dude: YEAH, DON'T COUNT ON ME BEING BACK, CAUSE IT SUCKS HERE
others: yeah, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out...
dude (next day): THAT'S IT - TODAY IS MY LAST DAY, BASTARDS
others:
dude: DON'T ROLL YOUR EYES AT ME - THAT'S WHAT SUCKS ABOUT THIS PLACE
... on and on ... and two months later, "dude" is still here.
Those are the "attention getter" quitters... You, on the other hand, have serious issues in your life and you are RIGHTLY taking time off from less important things to handle the serious issues. You are part of our family and a part of this community, and I know I can speak for everybody in saying that we have no doubts that you are being sincere and mature about this. Best of luck to you, matt. :)
What Prime said. The /quit club pisses me off, not people who are earnestly saying good bye for reasons they cannot control.
Madmat, I had a great time teasing you about your GeForceFX (< ATI DAMMIT!), and will miss having you around even if it is only a temporary circumstance. Every member here is valuable, but you've got a certain wisened spunk about ya that makes your posts worth reading every time I see them.
Come back soon, we'll all hope and pray for the absolute best in our own ways. When circumstance toughens the road ahead, smile in the face of adversity for it is no mirror and will not smile mockingly back. The trials of life are troublesome, and difficult, and wearying.. But they are trials with conclusions, trials with outcomes and ends. Suffering is not forever, nor is misfortune. Chance will smile upon you, and for all the better.
God speed.
