Well after understanding wifes trip to NY I thought it'd be nice to take the kids on an aeroplane, They're always asking to. When my middle son and youngest daughter were 12 I took them to London for a day out, youngest son is 11 this year so I thought I'd take them all. We're leaving Manchester next saturday morning. I want to do the same as I did with the other two, Tower of London, Westminster Abbey (inc Big Ben, houses of parliament, Buckingham palace) Then the Natural history museum ending in the science museum next door. A very full day out, it'll be great. :ukflag:

I'm taking my digital camera. The other times I've been I only had an optical camera so I'll get loads of pics. I love the tower and westminster abbey, the history jumps out and grabs you by the throat. Elizibeth 1's tomb and Henry v111's armour, Wow.

Well if you get to the tower between 10 an 12 look for a guy at the back of a small group with an understanding wife and two kids that are taller than him and a smaller one. He'll be saying things like "no, go this way" "have a look at this" and "Anthony, put that beheading axe down".

In 24 hours we'll be flying.
I've gone off British airways a bit though. Eldest son decided he wants to do something else. I had a whinge at him because we've already bought his ticket and I didn't think it was refundable, oh well, kids!
I phoned BA.
me- I want to cancel a ticket.
BA- which one?
me - this one (gives details)
BA- ok, thank you.
me- any refund?
BA- not for the ticket but you do get the airport tax back, less £25 admin.
me- how much is the tax?
BA- £28
me- so I get £3 back?
BA- yes.
me- I may as well just keep the ticket and have an extra seat.
BA- doesn't work like that sir, a no show seat will be given to somebody on standby.
me- well can we change the name on it and take somebody else?
BA- nope.
me- so you've got us all ways then?
BA- it does state all this on our web site sir.
me- yeah, I thought it would. Thanks.
hangs up, tuts, looks at understanding wife, both tut. bummer!

I want to do 'the tour'. I have done the same thing with the other two for their birthdays. Tower of London, Westminster (Parliament, Buckingham palace, Westminster abbey) Natural history and Science museums.
A full day. I'll post some pics when we get back.

I've been to London twice, on business each time. It's not a cheap place by any means, but the history there is just so awe inspiring. Not in London, but up in Cambridge there is a small church next to the river Cam that has literally been there for 1000 years. Awe inspiring...we just don't have that kind of thing here in the states. Someday, when the kids are older and can perhaps begin to appreciate some of it, I want to go back there on my own time/dime and see the city in greater detail. You can only get so much squeezed into a 4 hour bus only tour.
Be sure to visit St. Paul's cathedral. Built in 1600's by Christopher Wren, and it survived the Nazi's blitz virtually unscathed. I'm not religious, but standing inside there, listening to the choir during services on a Friday, I got chills.

Cambridge is a tremendously historical place. It's expensive like London but it's a nice place :)

In Cambridge very briefly, but I knew I liked it. Stayed at the Crowne Plaza hotel (on expense account), drank Guinness at the pub next door, had lunch at the Rose and Crown or some such name like that...don't recall the exact name of place, also had Indian Food at a VERY tiny Indian restaurant wedged in between a grocery store and some other place (had lime curry or something like that, was NOT good!!! )...it was night, I wasn't driving, and the left side of road driving was freaking me out, so I don't really know WHERE I was for sure.
Cambridge was cool because when you looked at the various colleges there, and walked through their doors, you are walking the same steps that men like Newton and Gahndi and innumerable other scientific and political minds walked. It's humbling.
Hahaha.. I know that hotel.. and yes.. it's the Rose and Crown where you had lunch ;)
Shame you didnt get a chance to boating(punting) on the cam.. utter silliness for a tourist :)

We're back, knackered and happy. Had a great day but there were bigger crowds than on the last two times we went. Didn't get into westminster Abbey as we would have been queuing for hours. Still we did everything else and the kids loved the plane. I will post a few pics tomorrow, I'm going to bed, bliss.

For a year, I lived in Berkshire, about one hour by train from London center. I went to London whenever I could afford it. For me, St. Pauls Cathedral is the most memorable point.
