(Canadian Prices) I find a Logitech keyboard for $39.99 at Futureshop. It's on for $59.99 at Staples. Staples has the pricematch policy (match + 50% of the difference) so this will make the keyboard $29.99...a good deal.

I walk into Staples. There's the keyboard. There's the shelf sticker saying $59.99. I have the web printouts of both stores.

I walk over to the till. "That'll be all sir?"

"I'd like to pricematch this." I say.

I show my proof. He pulls up the item on the till and turns to me and says "Oh...I'll have to do this on the other till for a pricematch."

So I go around the other side and wait behind one customer for a minute and then It's my turn to pay. MEANWHILE I'm watching the guy who has the BALLS to take the item...key it into the till that I was just at and CHANGE the price!!!!

So the cashier scan my purchase and...$39.95. No price match.

So I go from all smiles to generally annoyed in 3 seconds. I say..."Your shelf price says $59.99. Your WEB says $59.99 and now you are telling me it's $39.95 after I actually watched you change the price in the stock right here in front of me?????"

"No sir. I just verified the amount."

"BS. I watched you pull up the SKU number which displayed $59.99 and watched you key in $39.95 so it would no longer pricematch. I'm not that dumb..you are 4 feet away from me."

"Well sir...I'm sorry but that's what it's listed at. This register isn't the one we use to price match."

"Just curious...Why not?"

"The other one is for price matching as it has the current prices."

"So you mean to tell me that this till...right here...may be wrong all the time...because it isn't connected to the head office? Aw...c'mon...I'm not buying that line. That's just an outright lie."

"Well I am sorry sir...would you still like the item?"

"Keep it...buh bye."

That's gotta suck. I deal with Staples alot, just bought a scanner from them last week which I had to exchange - for no other reason than the other scanner had a larger platen, and was cheaper ehehehe - can't says I've ever had a problem with them.. but then again, I've never had to make them Pricematch anything. Think I'll give it a shot, just to see what they do. I'll tell you before thursday whether or not they do the same thing.

The worst is when they have identical products, but they get the manufacturer to change the product number (or add a letter (HP1234A vs HP1234 everywhere else)) so they don't have to match.

Ugh. I don't understand. They lose a customer that way. Why not give you the deal but update the system afterwards.

The manager would not have helped, as its probably policy.

I rarely, if ever, by computer gear from Staples. They are almost always overpriced. This BS you experienced is unbelievable. Which Staples store was it, I'll make sure to avoid it from now on. PM me with that, would ya please?

Calling the manager probably would not have helped. A cashier can't make up that kind of BS on his/her own, someone has to traain them in this practice. It comes from above, you can bet on that.

Pricematching is just a draw to sucker someone in. There are only a few places I have found that are really good for pricematching. Electronics Boutique is great for pricematching video games. Many times my son has found a game in Wal-Mart, then gone to EB, where it is often a few dollars more, and told them Wal-Mart's price. EB will always match it. And he often prefers to buy at EB because they have a better warranty policy.

When I shop in the US, I have found that Circuit City does a good job pricematching Best Buy, and vice-versa.

Ya, Future Shop and Visions do that a lot. I hate that.

Last time I tried to price match at EB, they told me they don't do that anymore. That was almost 9 months ago I think.

For CC or BB to pricematch something they both have to be in stock and the only reason I would want to buy something from them that I could guy online is when there is a deal and they are both most likely to be out of stock at the time.

Staples sucks all the time! I've been boycotting them for the past 3 years after they screwed me over on a video card. I went in and bought some 64MB Nvidia card (can't remember what it was since I didn't know much about cards then) since my on board graphics sucked big time. I didn't know how to instal it so I took my computer in to have them do it. I go all day without my computer and come back only to find that they put a 32MB card in since the 64MB was out of stock. They then gave me a ATI card to try out which turned about to be incompatible with my HP system for whatever stupid reason. It didn't end there though. I told them I wanted the 64MB Nvidia card so they ordered it for me. 2 weeks later the card came but it was an AGP when I specifically requested a PCI since I didn't have an AGP port. They then gave me the run-a-round when I requested to ship the card back. They said that they would send me the shipping documents so that I didn't have to pay. Well another two weeks later the papers hadn't came and I had techies denying my ever requesting the papers like they'd be shot if they didn't. Needless to say by this time I was fuming since it had been over a month since I originally went in to get the card. This of course was costing me many hours of beta testing time for the game I needed the card for. I took the card in and demanded the manager right away. After arguing with her for 30 minutes about how I wanted my money now and didn't want to ship it back she gave in and gave me the money. The next day I drove to Best Buy bought the correct card and had it up and running myself within 15 minutes.

Staples is the worst computer and office supply store on the planet. I swear they train their employees to do everything in their power to rip you off and make you angry. As I said before I havn't shopped at Staples in over 3 years due to their lack of respect towards their customers. I don't blame you one bit for being angry MediaMan. I can't even say I'd have let em go as easy as you did. You have a lot more patience that I do.

Ps. Sorry for the one huge paragraph and poor organization. Just typing this made my blood boil so I wasn't really thinking about formatting.

The till? Till... means cash register? Hmm... I did not know this.

You know why this is relevant for me? A line from my favorite movie, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," now makes sense for the first time.

Dolores (to Eddy): "If I don't have that money I loaned you back in the till, I'm gonna lose my job."

You never know what you'll learn on SM ;D

Did you try the line: "Did you know I own a popular computer tech site?" I doubt it would've accomplished anything, but his reaction might've been amusing :)
