I need to know where I can get windows 95 on floppies. Or if anyone has it, perhaps they could hook me up. I have an old 486 laptop im messing with, and dos is kinda getting old.

It's still copywritten, therefore illegal to distribute and breaks our forum rules to discuss.

People should not make threads with that title as it's very hard not to laugh without even reading it. :D

Back in the day, I bought windows 95 on cd, so if I use that key, is it still illegal?

Yeah, if it's installed on only one machine, it's perfectly legal.

Don't think so. You bought it, you own it.

I lost that auction by the way :(. outbid at the last seccond. I did win one for windows 3.1 lol. still want 95 though. either that or a cdrom drive that i can plug into the side of it thru a pcmcia slot would do too. then i just gotta find a net adapter and im set. any idea what size card the laptop may take? all i can tell u is it is a 486 dx-2 from 1992 (or atleast thats what the sticker says). i honestly dont know much about pcmcia cards because ive never owned a laptop till now.

FYI Brian; It’s that laptop I pulled out of the trash the other day. ;D

Tony, that thing has only 7.5 megs of RAM, I recall Win95 needing 8 bare minimum, preferably 16.

If I were you, I wouldn't even go to the trouble. I'll look into getting Win95 floppies for you anyways.

I read on a copy of the box on that ebay listing above that it needs 4 minimum. I thought it was 8 too, maybe the floppy version is different. That laptop runs quite well by the way. I was playing quake the other day. Ill tell ya, it was a pain to install with no cd drive...

Do you evenhave enough HDD space? THe drive is only 256 MBs.

Minimum System Requirements For Windows 95
486 DX2 66 MHz Micro-Processor

8 Megabytes of RAM

Mouse

~130 MB Free Hard Drive space

It will be a bit cramped, but I say whatever. ill have enough space for a couple games and a word processor. Do I really need anything more?

Anyone have an old Windows For Workgroups floppy set around???? That is what that gen of box was made for.... BTW, you CAN install a subset of Windows95, sans browser, etc. RECOMMEND for 95 was 32 MB , seen subsets of it work on much less. The half meg diff between 7.5 and 8 MB is shared to video. Probably takes standard 30 pin (about that number of pins, probably not 72 pin) SIMMS.

I have decided to make a new thread with a new more attractive title to draw more attention to my many isues with what I have come to call 'Thy Olde Laptop'. View the old thread here (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12460) for information about the machine.

(EDIT: Threads merged - Spinner)

My next question is how do i trick a windows 3.1 upgrade into thinking windows 3.0 is installed? I know it can be done, but I dont know how. I've heard people talking about it before.

Just ask the Forum mod to change the title and merge the two threads

If you have the 3.0 disks, when the 3.1 install asks for the directory in which 3.0 is located, put the first 3.0 disk in and point the install to that disk.

Knoppix STD + crappy laptop + cheap wireless card = hours of fun!

Knoppix STD + crappy laptop + cheap wireless card = hours of fun!

Two problems. First, thy olde laptop has no 'chalice holder' (sorry, bad joke. i mean cd rom if u cant figure it out...), so I can't install thee software. Seccond, only got a 254 meg HD. I can't even sneaker net it over on floppies.

Also, I don't have the 3.0 disks. I found a hotline server with windows 3.1 full install, but the poop admin has guest everything shut off(except login), so I can't even PM him. Hmm. I still want 95 tho. Any other ideas on tricking the installer for 3.1?

Take the Laptop HD out and hook it to a regular computer using one of the 2.5-3.5 adapters (http://www.datapro.net/products/1920.html). Then just copy the installation discs to the Laptop drive.
