I've been upgrading an older Asus A7V133 mobo with a 1900+ Palamino and now I would like to re-use the 700 Mhz Duron I removed.

Not sure where to start, so I'll try to describe what I have. After removing the heatsink/fan, I noticed some of the goo had run off the CPU chip onto the sides of the processer. The original installation looks like a thermal tape had been used and some of it melted (?) cuase the previous owner had it overclocked to 900 Mhz.

How do I go about cleaning up the Duron? Or, do I need to do anything?

I used a plastic utensil to poke at the goo a little and it seems sticky and medium soft. Didn't want to push my luck till I found out what I was doing.

Any guidance is appreciated

Use some Isopropyl Alcohol if you have any aka rubbig alcohol. That will clean it right up.

Might want to try a utility knife if there are clumps of it anywhere. Just be careful when using it. Instead of poking at it, try to scrape it off, don't want to press your luck.

There are clumps on all 4 sides of the chip itself. I guess the best way to describe the goo is like 2 month old gum stuck on something. It's not hard, but it's not soft either.

I still have some denatured alcohol from cleaning the chipset heatsink. Does it matter if I use it on the chip as well as along the sides? The chip look to have some residue from the old tape.

Proceed with caution is required too...huhh?

 and cool one)s) after :)
