Saw somewhere in the forums before, but can't seem to find it now -- how do you add/reveal the msconfig function in Windows 2K? I would really like to turn off some auto-start, proprietary crap in my office machines.

You can copy (or extract) the msconfig executable from w98se and it will work. I haven't tried it, but I would suspect that the WinXP version might work, too.

You can download it from here (http://www.perfectdrivers.com/local/msconfigxp/msconfig.exe). Put it in the c:\winnt\system32\ (c:\winnt\ works also) folder.

I'm not sure whether using the 98 version will work on 2000, or is it just older versions off the original 98 that won't work? not 98SE. Either way, the one I linked to will work fine. I think it's from XP. :)

Cheers

No W98se available to me.

Oops - sorry, didn't notice the suggestion to extract from XP.

Thanks Spinner for the link. I've downloaded it. Out on a business trip starting tommorrow. Out of the office off and on for the next month. I'll report back on the success of the file.

Spinner, after dropping msconfig.exe into system32 or winnt, will the 'Run' command call it up? Or will I need to create an msconfig shortcut?

Leo, I just added them into a folder I made called msconfig and made a shortcut to activate it with on my Win2K rigs and it works just fine. I use the one out of XP.

If you put it in the above stated folder, it should, I think, be called up through the run command. But you can run it manually from anywhere, even a floppy disk. So either way should work fine.

Okie Dokie

I just compared the msconfig.exe files from WinXp and the version Spinner linked. They appear to be exactly the same. Both execute just the same on this XP box.

Yep I download it every time I install 2k and place it in the above mentioned folder and using Run it opens.
