Codec cleanup?

How do I cleanup my installed codecs?

Something is wrong, WMP 9 won't play DivX Avi files.
The DivX player does it without any problems.

How do I get my WMP 9 working again?
(I have no problems watching MPG's and other files, only Avi)

Can I uninstall WMP 9?

I installed RealAlternative, and it uses a modified version of Mediaplayer classic, DivX Avi's work fine with that player as well.

I guess a codec pack screwed something up, now I know I shouldn't use them.

I've had similar problems and would love to hear a solution. Also, what's the best alternative to Codec Packs? Individual downloads? Or is there a "better" codec pac?
