I am having a very frustrating time :rarr: trying to setup a home network for a friend.

Setup is a shuttle running WinXPHE and an older system running WinME. Connection is via a D-Link 4 port router.

Shuttle connected and doing OK for Internet access etc. The WinME rig is not accessing the router for some reason. Not the cable - Laptop connects ok via the cable. NIC is a belkin F5D5000. Driver updated. I have tried to manually config ip address and also using DHCP and none have worked.

I am totally pizz'd off and i'm really considering putting XP on the system.

I think i've covered most bases but any suggestions will be most appreciated

Things i have tried already
1. Updated NIC driver
2. Checked cable with another pc (working)
3. uninstalled firewall etc

Not done
1. tried another NIC
2. Connected direct to cable modem

I'm thinking NIC might be bad.

TIA

WinME was really picky and fussy with the networking when i used to run 2 systems on them.. i had to reboot them together (router on beforehand) and relog back in the network when windows starts..

better just reformat to a win2k pro/winxp based system.. should fix your problems and is much better :D

I also concur with Riddick's opinion. Winme is as poor an excuse for an OS as I've ever messed with. I'd much rather fight 98SE than WinMe if I have to mess with a 9x operating system.

Have tried fiddling with the advanced properties settings of your NIC? Sometimes, merely one setting one notch off can prevent a network connection.

Think i'll go Riddick & muddoc's advice and just reformat to WinXP. Never had 2 set up a new OS on a previously used HD. Can I reformat from CMD line? or do i need to do that from winXP CD?

Your xp cd should format the hdd. WinME was so horrible, I really hate it when someone comes into the office running ME, such a bad OS.

Here goes! Did a new WinXP install on said former ME system. Everything seemed 2 be going well till i installed the NIC. Seems it is knackered :banghead: . Cant get it 2 work in XP.

Aw well RMA and hopefully 2 more boxes folding

Thanks 4 all the help

In the NIC's advanced properties, if you set all auto-capable functions to auto, and it still doesn't work with new OS install, yes sir, you need to replace the card.
