Got wind of this on the way home... Then my daughter left a voice message about the same thing... Looks like Phish is calling quits after 21 years... It's been a great ride and although they never quite reached me like The Dead, I always enjoyed their shows... It'll be interesting to see where the tribe will go next. :-/

Looking on the bright side, at least we still have the summer tour!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

What was the point of telling us that? :shakehead

Anyway, Ocomik, I'm with you. Hey, all good things must come to an end, even Phish. Still, Trey's going to be doing solo stuff, so you can kind of get that Phish sound.

I bet those tix for Coventry are going to be worth a fortune.

I was thinking the same thing.

I started doing a little of the Phish thing once Jerry passed and it was always a blast. I can only imagine what the summer tour will be like.

I'm thinking I need to check with the Mrs. and see if she be interested in trying to catch a show.

I don't know whether to laugh at my Phish-loving friend, or help him mourn.

thanks for the bummer Trey, I'm going to drive to Vermont and plant a foot up your a** ...and you're off my xmas list.

Seriously though, they had a good run. Hell 21 years is a great run. It's also pretty cool for them to have the balls to come out and say:
"we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act."
most bands would just keep milking it.

I'm just a little mad that I'm going to be too broke this summer to go out of state to see any of the "farewell shows". You guys think I could write them a letter to get them to come to detroit since they havent played in michigan since 1998?

I got an easier solution. Hit up prime for a BIG raise/shareholders loan (can't remember, are you guys partners?) :celebrate

It's OK to laugh at me, lord knows I laugh at myself almost everyday...

I remember when I first came face-to-face with Elvis fans at Graceland and how they would talk about Elvis in such a spiritual way. I always viewed them as being a little off center and a great target for comedic fodder.

Then I went to my first Grateful Dead show and I think I began to understand how individuals could be touched spiritually by something that wasn't necessarily considered (at least by those whom had never experienced it) to be as such.

To me the Dead was more than a show but was about the gathering of a tribe. People with a common purpose and a shared sense of values. I've learned alot from these experiences and am thankful to have had them.

It is with this same understanding that I realize that Phish has had a similar effect on many people. Those of the community are feeling a sense of loss and my heart goes out to them.

In the same breath, many of the things that make me describe myself as a Deadhead are the same exact things that have drawn me to the Short-Media community. A common interest and purpose, a willingness to help your fellow brother and sister, a sharing of ideas, etc... As I see it, it's just another derivation of the tribe and I for one am happy to have come across it.

I am beyond words.

I saw Phish 7 times in two years, and my friend has probably seen them 50. I listen to them probably 3 hours per day, every day...I have listened to one of their albums over 1500 (probably closer to 2000) times. As sad as I am, I agree that it's best to go out while you still have the integrity you started with, unlike some other bands that don't gather no moss... :bawling:

Well, there's still WSP, moe., Soulive, MMW, STI, Umphrey's McGee, and a hundred other jam bands.

String Cheese Incident has probably been the band that has caught my interest the most. Sirius sat. radio has a station called Jam_ON, nothing but jam bands, and I was able to hear moe for the first time the other day. Pretty sweet stuff.

I'm with that. It's not like phish was the only band around that's known to *gasp* improv *gasp* onstage. They'll be dearly missed, but at least we have THOUSANDS of hours of their music thats up for trade with no questions asked.

I'm also giving 2:1 odds in favor of a reunion show sometime after 5 years. Like those guys are never ever going to play music together again...

I still remember going to Sugarbush, VT to see Phish play back in 1994? 1993? (hell I'm old). It had to be by far the best concert I ever went to. I think I need to get the albums out and start listening to some Reba, Run like an antelope, Guelah Papyrus, and Lengthwise. Ah I will miss them.

Fatcat,

that was the last show I saw...I moved back to Halifax shortly thereafter and never got a chance to get out to see them. That show was awesome. Sweetest intro to Antelope I ever heard, and incorporating the comet hitting Jupiter into Harpua was masterful.I want to buy it before it goes out of production (it's #2 of their live series).

Yeah, Kwitko et al., there are aother bands like WSP (try finding a WSP CD in Halifax- be like trying to find a Boy George look-a-like at a Sepultura concert), but that''s like telling a Dale Earnhardt fan that there are other car jockeys out there.

I guess that is the one good thing, that somewhere, someone has a copy of every show...my friend has two bookshelves full of live tapes. I can always keep bugging him for copies...

Looks like Phish is calling quits after 21 years Wow, being the pop culture kind of guy that I am, I just heard about this group (person?) for the first time a couple days ago.

"Jimmy, I have some bad news..."

I know what you mean about telling phans there are other bands out there. I remember trying to tell my friend that Jerry's death was not the end of the world. He didn't want to hear it. Nobody likes hearing their favorite band is calling it quits.

By the way, do any of you guys have a copy of Tower Theater, Port Chester, NY 11/27/92?

For those that get it, it's NOT JUST about the music but about the whole scene. From heading out on the road, to meeting new friends, camping, drum circles, the lot before/after the show, etc... It's a unique sub-culture in and of itself.

I guess it really depends on your definition of pop culture. Phish, as well as many of the jam bands the preceded, never fit into the typical music industry mold. They fell more in line with what jazz artists were doing, i.e. playing a song that lasted 20+ minutes.

This type of music has a hardtime fitting anywhere on commercial radio because of the profit concerns.

To this day, I think the only time I hear Grateful Dead, Phish, etc... is when it's a studio cut that falls in under the 5 minute mark.

Well then, maybe this group was one I would/would have enjoyed.
