Hi everyone!

I've run the Hijack This scan on my kid's computer and am copying the scan results below. Would y'all please tell me which files I should delete or be concerned about?

You're gonna have to boot into safe mode, run HJT, and fix all these, then you're gonna want to delete the following folders in safe mode:

C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\
C:\Program Files\TV Media
c:\Program Files\iesearchbar\
C:\Program Files\CAKER (Something that starts with CAKER)
C:\Program Files\Toolbar\

Wow... You've got a serious mess on your hands here. After all that, run AdAware or Spybot Search & Destroy IN SAFE MODE

Then you're going to want to update your virus definitions and do a full virus scan, because you've got trojans as well.

Then, run another spyware scan

Then, post your new HJT log so we can see what's next.

I would use stronger words than Plethora, but the site word censor would not pass them, so I will simply say I GAVE UP about 25 lines into seeing this. He very probably will also need LSP_fix on the box before trying to kill all this stuff, because it is likely to have VERY broken LSP linking when done.

Let me start by staying thank you again to all who have helped!

I used HJT in safe mode and deleted all the suggested files. I deleted in safe mode the suggested folders except c:\program files\iesearchbar\ I could not find this folder.

I ran spybot search and destroy in safe mode and it did not identify any files to fix.

I ran HJT again and below are the scan results.

Any files I need to delete or be concerned about? Do I need to run any other programs?

Prime, I also read your suggested article and printed it for future reference.

Thanks again for all your help. I ran LSP_fix and also tried three times to delete the three R3 and four 010 files you suggested I delete in your last reply. However, as you will see in the scan results below, I couldn't delete them. I checked them in the scan results box and it said I had to reboot for the fix to take effect. After the reboots, I ran the scan and the files were still there.

Any suggestions?

A couple of suggestions...

Before going into Safe Mode and running HJT, first disable your System Restore. (Start -> Control Panel -> System -> System Restore -> Turn Off System Restore on All Drives.

Then reboot into Safe Mode, run HJT and try the fixes suggested by Prime.

Then reboot into normal mode, and check HJT to see if they are gone. If they are, re-enable System Restore from the control panel above.

If they are not gone, we need to check your startup lists to see if something is hiding in a Reg Entry or an INI file not covered by HJT's basic scan.

Run HJT, click on Config, Misc Tools. Turn on the checkbox for "List also Minor sections (full.) Then click Generate Startup List. Save the list as a text file, and copy and paste here. It will be long.....but it lets us look at a pretty much everything that starts automatically on your system.

Also, judging by your HJT scans, it looks like you are not running any anti-virus software. If this is correct, you *need* to get some anti-virus software installed. Feel free to browse this thread (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12261) for suggestions.

Thanks again to all of your for your help!

I turned off system restore before I ran the first HJT and have had it off for all the scans.

I am only able to boot in safe mode now, I've been trying to work that problem in the emergency forum under thread entitled "cant boot in windows XP...help!"

I ran the HJT with the list also minor sections (full) turned on and copied the scan results below.

I have norton antivirus software on the computer, but I guess it is disabled in safe mode. I can't run any scans using it in safe mode or connect to the internet to update virus definitions.

Any suggestions????

That's not the right log file for the startup list. Follow my instructions above carefully again:

Run HJT, click on Config, Misc Tools. Turn on the checkbox for "List also Minor sections (full.) Then click Generate Startup List. Save the list as a text file, and copy and paste here.

That log file will also be saved in your HJT folder called startuplist.txt.

I want to see that log, because it shows many more things than a standard HJT log, including all the autorun entries from the registry, task scheduler jobs, and anything in your Startup folders. Those are the hiding places for virus files, spyware, etc. Let's see that just to be safe.

Does that startup list have to be generated after a normal boot? I can only boot in safe mode. System won't boot in normal....sometimes I can boot by selecting boot in last confiuration that worked mode.

Tells us that you have a "scheduled task" running. That may be something legit, such as a scheduled virus scan, etc...or it may be something malicious, like a reinstaller.

Please go to your Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks, and see what is listed in there. Find the scheduled task, check it's properties, what .exe or .bat file it is referening, etc,m as well as how often it is set to run. Let me know what you discover.
