Mpg Mpeg formats ?

Hiya folks, i have been driving myself insane looking and trying to workout why various mpg files didn't always work on my dvd player. Iv looked over the web but the resolution is always different.

I have a 384x288 resolution mpg file but cannot workout what format it is in, won't play on my dvd player. I live in england and use pal?

The second file which does play is 352x 264 which isn't listed under svcd vcd or dvd. Any thought's as to what format these are in?

I also have a couple which are 768x576 mpg, which also play. I need to understand so i don't waste dvd blanks burning dvd's which won't play, any help?

Before burning an MPEG onto a disc, it must always be run through an encoder to meet a couple of requirements to play properly:

1) It must be the proper resolution for your region (PAL/NTSC/SECAM)
2) It must be the proper framerate for your region (25/23.976/29.97)
3) It must have the proper audio (48KHz for DVD)
4) It must have a proper header (MPEG1/MPEG2)

The best program to use is TMPGenc for this, but at the moment I'm trying to track down some tutorials, as it's a complicated process to explain.

This is the list I am going by, i have a pal region hightlighted in red.

VCD NTSC CD MPEG 1 352 x 288
VCD PAL CD MPEG 1 352 x 240
SVCD NTSC CD MPEG 2 480 x 480
SVCD PAL CD MPEG 2 480 x 576
DVD NTSC DVD MPEG 2 720 x 480
DVD PAL DVD MPEG 2 720 x 576

None of the above matches my frame rate. These will play on my dvd player listed below so i don't understand your reply.

352 x 264 ? Not sure which format? Both end as a mpg format. plays perfect
768 x 576 ? Again not sure of format? perfect.

Will not play 384 x 288 ?

Im mostly interested in 352 x 264 as this plays in 3 different dvd pal players? Im assuming vcd format but need clarification. ?
