View Full Version : 500watt+ PSU (with POTs) Recommendation

The DFI Ultra Infinity I'm playing with has giant voltage sags when OCing over FSB230 & 2300mhz. The same Robanton 600w PSU which powers my EPox KT600 XP-M @ 2.3ghz (12v reads 12.22) & MSI K7D-L Dual MP2800+ @ 2.25ghz (12v reads 12.28) DROPS to as low as 11.3 when I try to set Vcore over v1.85 (so did the 3 other different PSUs I tried - it's a common problem with the DFI NF2 mobos). And not only does it undervolt Vcore by .05volts (to get v1.65 I have to set it a v1.70) if I try to set it past v1.85 it varies Vcore by over .1v :banghead: :banghead:

To stabilize FSB240 (x10) and FSB250 (x9) I actually had to mod 2 ATX extension cables together to use two PSUs simultaneously, both contolled by the mobo . One powers the mobo/cpu and the other the video card (9800 Pro) and drives. (what a mess, cables everywhere :D) BUT FSB250 (x10) is still a no go :rant: :banghead:

I WANT FSB250 2500MHZ!

So finally...To combat the low 12v problem I need a 500watts+ PSU with POTs so I can increase the 12v rail. ANY Suggestions!

I agree with Geeky on this one.
Actually I was going to suggest it myself, but Geeky got ahead of me. :cool:

Damn that was fast! :thumbup

Are the Pots externally accessible or do I have to open it up? (edit) Oh, I see - NICE!(edit)

Antec True Control 550w (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-922&depa=1) $105shipped OUCH!

Damn this hardware addiction!

the pots are in a 5.25" bay mounting frame that has space for a 3.5" drive in addition to the pots. It also has manual fan speed control for the PSU fans, and all fans connected to the fan control leads.

It's a great psu, Omega. Definitely worth the money. I have both it and an Enermax 651 PVE, which is also a 550 watt psu and I find the rails a little more stable on the Antec, plus they can be externally adjusted via the front panel. Finally, it's much cheaper than the Enermax too, which goes for around $150 or more.

Thats my suggestion as well. I think it can be adjusted up to 10% which I hope is enough to overcome the low voltage on your motherboard.

I wonder if the PC Power and Cooling PSU would help. Dont know if it is adjustable but here they are the best.

You can get POTs on the PC Power & Cooling units, but $200+ is a bit excessive for a PSU...

If only Epox or Abit made a 250mhz S462 mobo.....

Geeky1 & MJO :respect::respect::respect::respect:

Just the simple switch to the Antec True Control 550w gave me basic stability, a slight tweak upwards on the 12v rail gave me FSB250 2500mhz :celebrate

BUT!!! FSB240 1T > FSB250 2T :(

Now all I need is 512MB memory that'll do Cas2-3-3-10 1T @ FSB250 :D (On a NF2 mobo)

Oh well....
The search continues.......

Good to hear Omega65. :thumbsup:

Regarding the memory, it will be difficult to find memory that fast at those timings.
Maybe some BH-5 @ 3.2V?
BH-5 and BH-6 are probably the only chips capable of that speed and those timings. You can get memory that can take the speed, but they use relaxed timings.
BH-5 is supposedly rated @ 3.3V, I haven't investigated it myself.

Why Tras=10?
Tras=11 is usually(99%) better in a NF2 MB.

Yeah I know that memory is hard to find. I seen it for sale by various people though. But I'm not really going to buy it. :)

Look over at AMDMB forums, there are usually several people selling BH-5 over there.

Try the Super-Flower at svc. OP reviewed it awhile back and it sounded awesome. Much more adjustment then the antec.

I have a neighber thats been modding some cheap 500 watt ones for me. The 12 volt ends up around 12.5 and the 5 volt at 5.3 or so.

And the one OP reviewed had more smaller fans. Like four of them if I remember right and a pretty wild (gaudy) paint job or stickers.
