DVD Burning?

Hey guys

Comming on monday or tuesday im going to buy a dvd burner, does anyone know what the best softwear to use would be for making backups of movies?
I collect dvds and I have some that I dont want to get ruined (LOTR Series and so on) but ive never done this before. any help would be great.
