Tyan S2668ANR - Won't boot!

I just installed a Tyan S2668ANR with a single Xeon 2.66 processor. When I turn it on....no video. I get a code 49 which in the manual says "Initialize PCI bus and devices".

Mobo: Tyan S2668ANR
CPU: Xeon 2.66 (mounted in socket 1)
Video: Radeon 9200SE (just removed from KX7 board that I'm replacing with the Tyan)
PSU: 300 watt Antec

I have disconnected all IDE cables.
I have disconnected power from all drives.
I have tried clearing CMOS (jumped for 30 secs) twice.

I have powered off and on several times and always give the same code.

Any ideas?

Let's assume for a moment, it might be the wrong code.

Jump it for more than 30 seconds, pull the BIOS battery, and unplug the system from the wall. Wait 5 minutes, have dinner or something.

Try swapping memory also.

I did have it unplugged when I jumped the CMOS, but I didn't take the battery out. Right now, it's unplugged, CMOS jumped and CMOS battery is out. I actually am going to eat dinner :) and then I'll come back and see what happens.

If the same problem exists, I'll try some different ram. The manual says it must be installed in pairs and the pair that's in it, is not a matching pair. (I didn't know the board required two ram modules when I bought it) What's really funny is that is does not support registered ecc ram. I don't have any anyway, I just thought that was weird for a dual cpu board.

Taking the battery out didn't fix the problem. I don't have a matching pair of ram modules so I guess I'll go tomorrow and buy some. Maybe that will fix it. :confused:

I don't get any beeps, just code 49 on the mobo display.

Unmatched pairs <i>can</i> create problems, especially if it's not something like Kingston or Corsair.

do you have all three power plugs plug in? the 20pin, 4 pin (p4), and the 4 pin molex.

Yes, all three and positioned per the manual.

Take the mobo out of the case and run it on cardboard to check for case short.

Good assumption Thrax. I haven't had a chance to get more memory, but by taking down another system (temporarily) I was able to get a matched pair of PNY PC2700 modules to try. BINGO! IT POSTED!

I had to return one of the modules to the other machine to get it back running as I am not ready to install the OS on this one yet.

I'm gonna grab another PNY PC2700 module tomorrow and I should be able to get this one up and running. I have to find my copy of WinXP or Win2K so I can install the OS.

Is there anything special to installing the OS on this one? It will have hyperthreading enabled and once I get the second CPU RMA'd (I have a RMA number), it will be a true dually.

I would suggest going with XP Pro as is is supposed to load balance better than Win2K Pro with HT processors. That is what I've read anyways, no actual hands on experience though.

BTW, if you already have an oem XP Pro disk and need a new license to have a legal os on the rig, a company called www.9software.com sells the oem XP Pro license COA (the sticker) for $86, which will save you more than $50 if you want to be legal about it. ;) I just got one for my new laptop I ordered.

My copy of WinXP is "HOME" edition. It won't be installed on but one computer as I will be reformatting the drive it's on now. Unfortunately, that CD is in storage where it's been for over a year now. :(

I may use a different drive and put my copy of Win2K on this dually.

Do I have to select a specific HAL or will it know what to select automatically? Can you tell I'm a n00b? :D

I just stuck the cd in and ran with it myself.:D BTW, since that is XP Home you have, then definitely go with Win2K Pro. XP Home only supports 1 physical processor.

When you do get your other proc in, you won't have to reinstall the os. All you will have to do is to install the proc, boot up, then change from ACPI Uniprocessor PC to ACPI Multiporcessor PC in system properties. But since that's a HT proc, the multiprocessor hal might already be chosen when you install the os. I'm not sure on that though as I've never installed an os on an Intel dually that has HT procs.

Doesnt that MB require reg ddr? I have never had any probs mixing and matching any reg ddr EXCEPT when trying to run dual channel. And there is usualy a way to change what dimms are populated to run the dimms as single channel. I have owned more dualies and more reg ddr of all makes and models then most users and the hiccup was running mix matched in slots requireing dual channel.

2k pro does not support two hyperthreaded CPUs- it sees 4 CPUs, but it'll only use 2. The only way to get "all 4" CPUs without using a server OS is to use XP Pro.

Well then it sounds like a new os is in your future, MrBill, if you want to take full advantage of that new mobo. If you have access to an oem copy of XP pro, you can just order the license/sticker/COA(whatever you want to call it :D ) from www.9software.com and save around $55. That's what I did for the os for my new laptop, cost me $86 instead of around $140 for an XP Pro CD and COA. I already have 2 copies of the oem XP Pro CD, so I didn't need another legal CD, just a legal sticker. :)

I RMA'd the CPU with the bent pins. I sent it "return receipt requested". The CPU got here before the return receipt...LOL. :)

It didn't want to go in the socket. I couldn't see anything wrong with it! :banghead: I messed with it for TWO hours before getting pissed off and just forcing it in. IT WORKS! :D

Though the company didn't reply to my emails, one phone call and I got an RMA and 6 days after I sent it back I had a replacement in hand. I guess I can't complain about their service.

It's running on Win2K-Pro since I haven't bought XP-Pro yet so I can't use the hyperthreading. :(

I'm glad to hear that you got your replacement cpu in ok, MrBill. Also, since you haven't bought XP Pro yet, do you have access to an oem XP Pro disk? If you do, then you can just buy an oem license instead of buying the whole thing for $140 or so and save around $50. That's what I did for my new laptop, since I already had 2 XP Pro disks. The license cost me $86 instead of the $140 or so for the license and disk.
